Votes and approves move for US statehood. Why not? I'm sure word has traveled there about all the free **** they can get when they do it. Their lives suddenly get much better.
I have family that lives there. They think it would be a bad deal for PR. Right now they get US money with little/no strings attached. Statehood would add strings.
The US "acquired" Puerto Rico during our liberation of all their remaining colonies during the McKinley administration. We kept the Phillipines and had to kill a few hundred thousand of them that did not want to be liberated from one bunch of westerners and acquired by another. We kept Puerto Rico.
The PRs have been American citizens with the right to come here and are free from paying US taxes. That will end with statehood. The people who voted for statehood had no illusions they are going to be economically better off in the short run. There are huge incentiives to do business there that will be gone, via our constitution, if they get statehood.
I suspect some people think they are looking for handouts because that is their kneejerk reaction re hispanics and blacks. I just pitched in the race card, in case you bigots didn't recognize it.
There is no particular reason not to make them a state; George H W Bush, our last competent president, tried to push the idea a couple of decades ago.
The only downside I see to it is that it gives two more senators to the democrats. I guess I can live with that.
