My wife and I are headed to a destination wedding in San Juan, Puerto Rico in June. The wedding is on Saturday and we plan on arriving in San Juan Thurs. and hanging with our friends in San Juan until Sunday.

We will probably make it about a week vacation, so that leaves 3 or 4 more days. We are probably going to check out Vieques and/or Culebra. Also, the El Yunque rain forest seems worth a visit. Are these the best spots to hit up besides San Juan? Should we stay near these destinations or stay based out of San Juan? We are in our late 20s, don't need the nicest accomodations, but can afford decent accomodations, enjoy going out, but want to get more out of the trip than just an all inclusive/party type experience.

Any recommendations about sites natural or man-made, accommodations, and restaurants are greatly appreciated.

Rincon is fantastic, I stayed there 3 nights last Feb in a B&B called the Blue Boy Inn. Make sure you check out the bioluminescent bay at Vieques. There's also one on the west coast of PR but I think the one at Vieques is the best one in the world.

Flamenco Beach on Culebra was truly amazing. El Yunque was also well worth the visit. I wish we had hit up Vieques, but we didn't have time. We also missed out on the Bioluminescent bays which I've heard are breathtaking. The beaches on the mainland within a quick drive of San Juan were just ok considering what you'll see on either Culebra/Vieques. Don't waste your time with the caves, underground river, or the Arecibo observatory. Old San Juan deserves a full day if not 1.5 days. Overall I really enjoyed my trip to PR. Be cautious when you veer away from the touristy spots because it can be a bit unsafe. Even I (a Hispanic fluent in Spanish) stuck out like a soar thumb at times... although I can blame my blond white-as-can-be girlfriend for a lot of the attention.
