Puerto Rico

My gf and I were looking for an exotic, but reasonably priced vacation. We are going to Puerto Rico in a couple weeks... staying in San Juan 5 days and Culebra 2 days. Anyone have any advice... we plan to do all the big ticket items like Luquilo and El Yunque...

We stayed at the Ritz in San Juan, and it was a blast. I wish I could tell you what to do and where to go, but it was some time ago when we went. The other problem was we were hammered the entire time we were there and i do not recall well where we ate, etc. IT was a hell of a good time though. I do know we went into Old San Juan at night a few times for dinner and clubs. Take a **** load of mosquito spray if you're going anywhere near the rain forest. I do recall the biggest GD mosquitoesI have ever seen, and **** loads of them.

I never had any problems with mosquitos at El Yunque, but that doesn't mean they're not there. If you're going to Luquillo, be sure and walk the long strip of food stands/bars off the main highway near the beaches and sample the food. Good grub there (baccalaitos are awesome), and most everything costs a buck if I remember right.

I love Old San Juan- I could spend an entire day walking around there. If you like cigars, be sure and stop in at Don Collins cigars on Cristo Street/Calle Cristo. Awesome cigars, and you'll probably be offered a glass of dark rum and a free stogie to sample.

We stayed at the Condado Plaza Hotel, which was pretty nice, and has good-sized casino. If you like blackjack, you should know that people there play a different style. It seems like no one wants to hit anything higher than 14/15, regardless of what the dealer was showing. My wife's family is from PR and none of them could explain that to me.

Canned beers are 10 oz., not 12. You'll come back liking Medalla if you're a beer drinker.

I can't really recommend any nice restaurants. I try to eat local when I go somewhere I've never been, and that usually means cheap but good.

I was there in February and stayed 3 nights in Rincon at the Blue Boy Inn. Very relaxing, quiet, walking distance to a nice restaurant, 1 minute to the beach, 30 seconds to a bar / restaurant. Rincon was amazing. Even saw some whales out in the ocean.
