Pubs/Bars To Take German Friends

I recently met several people from Germany. I know of Scholz's but what are some other good places to take them?

Mother Egan's on 6th down by Katz's is a good Irish pub. Dog & Duck on 17th a block off Guadalupe is a good English pub. There is a kick *** German restaraunt and biergarden in Walburg, north of Georgetown if they're homesick. That place is the real deal.

Schlitterbahn. (j/k)

I dunno, maybe Fredericksburg? What's the deal - are they visitors or permanent residents who are homesick? Are you looking specifically for something "german" or are you just wanting to take them somewhere to hang out and experience Texas? Because if I were in Germany, the last thing I'd want is for some local to take me to their version of a Tex Mex restaurant. I mean, nothing against Scholz's but I'm sure it pales in comparison to the world class beer halls they're accustomed to.

They are students that just moved here. I was looking for somewhere they could get some good beer from back home because they made a comment about how they liked Shiner but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the beer they have at home.

Oh, OK. Well, for beer variety, including lots of German, you can't beat Ginger Man. Draught House and Dog & Duck as previously mentioned are known for their diversity of beer. Also Opal Divines, or BB Rovers if you're up north, would likely have a decent selection of German stuff.

You might steer them towards some local brews - Live Oak in particular makes a great German style hefeweizen and they should have an Octoberfest coming out soon if it's isn't here already.

Walburg. They can speak in German to the proprietors, and have German beer on draught, with authentic food to boot.

I'am sure it is different now, but I can remember showing up there as an 18 year old freshman at Southwestern Univ. and ordering a pitcher of Spaten on draft in their biergarten, looking (barely) like I had just passed my drivers license test. God, Walburg, such a great place.

Walburg would be a good place if they get homesick.

Otherwise, I agree with the poster who said that as a Texan they wouldn't want to have Tex Mex in Germany.

If you are in a hurry take them to eat at the French place, Chez Nous. They will be in and out of there most post hastily.

All the germans I know love to hang out at the Crown and Anchor. I don't know why you would want to take them to someplaces like Scholz's, which is kinda/sorta germanic....

I can say this honestly: You are making a huge mistake. Take them to TEXAS places, not GERMAN places.

How would you feel if you went to Frankfurt and someone took you for BBQ or Mexican food or two-stepping. I've been in both shoes, overseas and having overseas guests and its ALWAYS better to do local things than try to bring someone's country to them.

This was meant to get suggestions on places they can get good beer. I normally just drink Shiner so I was needing suggestions. Didn't necessarily have to be somewhere German just somewhere they can drink something besides Miller and Bud Light.

Best places for good beer. Some already mentioned above. In no order of preference:

1. Draught House on Medical Pkwy near 41st. Excellent British Pub feel.
2. Opal Devine's on 6th at Rio Grande.
3. Mother Egan's across the street from Opals.
4. Fado at 4th and Lavaca. Irish pub feel. Shows English football on weekend mornings. Probably showing Euro2008 qualifying this weekend.
5. Gingerman next door to Fado. Probably the best selection of beers in Austin.
6. Crown and Anchor: Speedway and 30th north of campus. Probably lots of international students will be hanging out there.
7. Dog and Duck at Guadalupe and 17th. Another good pub feel.

If they want to brave Sixth St. as most college kids do, Shakespeare's has a good selection. My personal favorite on 6th is Lovejoy's. It usually has its fair share of graduate students and backpackers so your German friends should feel right at home.

after having lived in Munich for awhile, i can attest that the gingerman is where i go to get the beer i loved back there. they can even find Augustiner Helles there (best beer in germany, in my opinion), but it doesn't taste quite the same.

they have julius echter, ayinger, spaten, paulaner, lowenbrau, a few hofbrau varieties, and two franziskaner varieties.

the gingerman is expensive, but i can't imagine a better place to find a good selection of german beer. they also have pretzels, aber keine wurst und senf.
