PSA: Free cab rides in Austin tonight

Thanks for the heads up. I find it funny that it says that you must be 21 to use the service but one of the sponsors is Travis County Underage Drinking Prevention Program.

Friends called the number many times with no answer. Talked to cabbies on the street about it and they said that we needed a voucher from a bar. The people in the bar said they knew nothing about it. Seems like a program to give a lot of state agencies a good name while giving very few free rides home.

The vouchers had to be called in to the cab company as well. Getting through to Yellow Cab is impossible on New Year's Eve. Also, no cab driver wants to take someone so cheap as to go through all that mess just for a free ride (no tip). I bet there were less than 10 vouchers used all night.

If you use the same link, you can see that they are doing it again for the super bowl. Im going to try it again just to see what happens.

The APD is now giving tickets to cab drivers who pick up or drop off anybody within 20 feet of an intersection downtown. So now you know why if you are hailing a cab and they go by you. It's like the APD doesn't want anybody to take a cab.

I guess it is to make sure there are not sudden stops, excessive lane changing on a dime or illegal turnarounds in an intersection. They could attempt to get the word out as a PSA to people to not put a cabbie in a tough spot or bind by letting us know to get out of an intersection.

It is a rule that makes sense but not the way they are going about it. Very stupidly executed.
