PSA: Blockbuster Online rip-off

Second month in a row Blockbuster has tried this.

I canceled my Blockbuster Online account last month and sent in the DVDs I still had out. I got a cancellation confirmation e-mail. Later I find out that the day after the cancellation, Blockbuster charged my credit card for another monthly fee. A few days later I start getting DVDs in the mail again.

So I call and they claim that there is a note on my account saying that I called to say I was "remorseful" for having canceled and requested that my account be reinstated. After some back-and-forth concerning the logic of the "remorse-and-reinstate" scam, they agree to cancel my account, but refuse to refund my card because that isn't their "policy." I can, however, get a gift card or they can permit me to use the service for another month. After more back-and-forth, they agree to the refund.

A few weeks go by and I see the DVDs sitting there, so I drop them in the mail. A few days later, more DVDs show up in the mail. I check my credit card online and see that Blockbuster has charged my card AGAIN the day they received the DVDs I returned.

Want to know what happened? See Paragraph 2 above. I even got the "remorse-and-reinstate" line again almost verbatim. Same exact thing.

Do yourself a favor. If you're thinking about switching from Netflix to Blockbuster just to try it out or thinking about trying out an online DVD service for the first time, know that Blockbuster is a scam waiting to happen.

I tried out Blockbuster earlier this year for a couple of months. I ended up cancelling it because I found them to be slightly slower than Netflix. Fortunately I never had any of the issues that you described.
