Prospect Evaluation

Luck camped in Austin prior to his senior year and he wanted to come to Texas, but never received an offer or the time of day b/c of Garrett Gilbert coming up the next year! Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.... this time it didn't!

One never avoids signing someone one year to sign someone the next year because who knows, you may not sign either. To say that Luck wasn't signed to sign Gilbert years later is a ridiculus statement. All I remember is that Luck committed to Stanford early in the recruiting process.

To say Texas should have gone after and signed someone they didn't is ridiculus. Both the player and school need to show the interest in each other to get a signature. For some it is the school that may not show the interest for one reason or another. For others it is the players that may show little interest. The coaches won't waste time irecruiting players showing little or no interest in Texas, even top players.

I understand Luck was a Stanford lock and Texas never had a chance.

I wonder if the 2012 class will not have as many early commits and Mack will change his philosophy in this area.

Luck attended camp and was not offered. He was the top rated QB in the state and a national top 100 recruit. We did not take a QB that year. Considering the staff always goes after the in state prospects first... that was a huge miss.

Cyrus Gray also attended camp and was not offered. He was also a top 100 recruit but I guess the staff liked Jeremy Hills, Tre Newton, and Ryan Roberson more.

If there is one area in which Mack shouldn't be 2nd guessed, it should be recruiting. But with that said, not going after Cyrus Gray, Christine Michael and Jermie Calhoun are head-scratchers.

Gray was an ATH and was told that he'd get a chance at RB but most likely would be playing WR or DB at Texas.

I'm second guessing him. Not so much for the system that he has set up to get the guys he wants in-state early, but talent evaluation.

Our running backs and wide receivers last years were not top notch. Our OL has been poor to average for a few years. We have no safeties.

I sure hope it's all coaching.

Which wide out last year was ready to play from game one? Who was the best down-field blocker. Hell if you watched the games in-person they seldom got separation down field.

An OL that blocks half of the play book fairly well sucks!

Which safety could cover a wide receiver?

It is all a shot in the dark (especially with the HS Jr's.) due to the pace of maturity in each individual kid.

Luck (or any quality QB) did not did not consider Texas as long as Colt was around. Gilbert was fortunate enough to have been born when he was.

Throughout last year the paid know it alls were reporting that Major was not as high on Whaley as Davis and Brown were. In retrospect Major had that figured out right. Let's see how Whaley pans out in Harsin's offense. I think he will end up at TE (or tackle if he doesn't stop eating) rather than H-back.

So we fail to recruit for three years and must hope that a freshman is ready. He showed promise, but we were never going to win a championship with a freshman go-to guy.

"I understand Luck was a Stanford lock and Texas never had a chance. "

This, and he committed to Stanford in June after his junior year. We had 4 scholarshipQB's on the roster at the time. Kinne transferred in May 2008 almost a year after Luck verbally committed to Stanford and before we knew Gilbert was going to be the national POY at LT.

Anyone notice that the Blake WR who scored a TD for Auburn is the same Austin guy who was not good enough to be recruited by Texas?

I sure hope it was coaching.

I think Blake was recruited by Texas but was asked to be a greyshirt. Could be wrong on that though. I think Calhoun had some grade issues and went across the Red River.

Did anyone notice there are currently over 300 division 1 players from the state of Texas signed every year that weren't offered by or didn't come to Texas?? What were we thinking?!

So we recruited 4 or 5 guys who we offered full current scholarships ahead of Blake. He was highly thought of at the time and I do understand that choices must be made.

I sure hope that our new coaching staff will get more out of the guys we do recruit.

I saw more guys wide open for Auburn in the championship game
than we had open all year!

Actually we signed 1 WR the year Blake came out. That was Greg Timmons. Both were 4* recruits and Timmons was rated higher. So far he has not contributed so we may have missed on that one, but he has a lot of time left to step up.

All I know is every bowl I watched that we were not qualified for had sons of Texas playing on the line, receiving, quarterbacking, or running the ball better than I saw the vast majority of our players doing last year.

Luck was rated all over the place back then. I think the AA Fab 55 had him 24th or something like that. That was the year that Mack had one recruit in the top 10 of that list (and I think it showed on the field this year)--not a good recruiting year for Texas at all.
