The time is ripe for the Horns to go into the NU Coliseum and take down the Cornhuskers at home.
Our team is taller, more athletic and more talented. Here is a closer look by position:
Our middles Lauren and Jen Doris are both three inches taller than their Nebraska counterparts, Cooper and Gates. Collectively our middles have more kills, hit for a higher percentage, and block more.
Our outsides Destinee and Juliann are two inches taller, respectively, than Larson and Mueller. Same deal: more kills, higher hitting percentage and better blockers.
Nebraska’s opposite Licht is taller than Ashley, but let’s face it, she is no Engle. Ashley hits and blocks better, not to mention serves, sets, digs and passes better.
Sydney Anderson, their setter is doing a nice job, but so is Michelle Kocher. Anderson has one more year of college experience, but she is new this year to the Huskers, as Michelle is to the Horns. Michelle has been very solid; she does not look like someone who is going to get rattled.
Kayla Banwarth got nuttin’ over Heather Kisner.
Overall, the Horns are hitting .316 vs. Nebraska’s .270, and blocking 3.06 per set vs. Nebraska’s 2.64. We both have the same number of aces.
Where does Nebraska have an edge? They play a little cleaner. Fewer service errors, fewer serve reception errors.
Jordan Larson is playing pretty well, but I remember in Austin last year she was completely neutralized. Remember that short serve we dropped on her? And our middles gave even the mighty Stalls fits!
The Horns will be playing in front of 4,000 Husker fans. But the Horns have shown no fear in tough road game situations. Remember Juliann in Lincoln last year? Plus our AVCA experience this year is a plus.
So to me the recipe is pretty simple. Keep it clean on ball control. Stay aggressive. Use our height and blocking and athleticism. Spread the ball around and use our well-balanced offensive attack.
Rock it Horns!
