Pro style QB Josh Rosen offered

Interesting, but I would be surprised if Texas has any better than a 2 - 3% chance of landing any from that group. In the past you did not see offers like this, but with the expanded recruiting staff things like this can happen without taking coaching time away from the staff.

Lately Texas has been known more for the qbs they didn't offer (JF, Jameis, Luck, RGIII) than for the ones it did. I guess Mack and staff have decided to do everything in their powers to prevent another future star from slipping through the cracks.

For awhile Mack was berated for going after out of state qb's, many time being burned or just having them stay closer to home. Holla comes to mind as one who burned us. Brantley as one who wished to stay close to home. Mark Sanchez had some interest in us but stayed closer to home. Then there was the kid who went to Nevada, closer to home, after transferring out of USC. For a good while Tattoo Pryor was very interested in Texas but then learned of the money making opportunities under the Jim Vest Tressel system available.

It's one or the other. Should he just stay in state or do the out of state? Or, option C, both.

BOTH!

Go for the best that will fit your system wherever they are. But understand that you have to be as realistic in evaluating probability of commitment as you are in evaluating talent. It is a tough balancing game.

My question is what is the Texas system? Pro style dropback QB? Dual threat QB? I thought we were heading for dual threat with Ash, Swoopes and Heard. Now I am confused by this offer.

It seems to me that the recruiting strategy has shifted to throwing out more longshot offers. Winning will be more effective in winning prized recruits than carpet bomb offers.

I believe that fixation is in the past.

Per Rivals Texas made the following offers in recent years:

2015 - 41 (6 Out of State) obviously more to come currently 9 commits
2014 - 81 (32 OOS) currently 24 commits
2013 - 46 (18 OOS) 15 commits
2012 - 49 (18 OOS) 28 commits
2011 - 33 (5 OOS) 22 commits
2010 - 33 (4 OOS) 25 commits
2009 - 32 (7 OOS) 20 commits

The apparent change in strategy began in the 2012 recruiting year after the partial overhaul of the coaching staff (Harsin, Applewhite to Co-OC, Searles, Bo Davis, Diaz, Wyatt).

The number of offers increased as did the offers to OOS recruits. Many of the additional OOS offers went to higher ranked reaches from SEC territory. Also, the early offers increased. Their are already 4 offers out to 2016 prospects with one commit. With the growth of the Player Personnel Dept, I believe these trends will continue .
