Preston Clark to 3B?

Made two great plays to end the game tonight. I love Torres' bat, but his glove is killing us. If Texas doesn't find defense on the hot corner then it stands no chance in the post season.

That's what I've thought too, but now that Preston's shoulder is healed, I imagine that Augie wants to give the more experienced guy time behind the plate.

However, if Texas doesn't find a solution at the hot corner, I would imagine that Augie might feel he has no choice except to put Preston there and Rupp as catcher. Where's Huston when you need him . . . ?

Huston wouldn't help our problems at third unless he was closing.

Also, Rupp was more than serviceable behind the plate when Preston was healing, so that move wouldn't bother me much. And his bat is a nice addition too.

Third base seems to be the position that is hardest to cover well. Preston does a great job at 3rd base and catcher.

Put him there at 3B for a few games at least, settle this thing down, and slowly bring back Torres. We need to stop the bleeding first.

Preston Clark has now played catcher, third base, left field, right field, and first base. We should have a mid-week game where he plays every position for one inning.
Really, he is amazingly versitile, but it's a shame in a way that he can't settle in at the catcher position. Maybe this last move will work out best for the team, and for Prseton Clark.

We need to recruit someone who actually plays third. We haven't had a good 3rd baseman since Maroul graduated. Peoples was painful to watch at times and we have just been plugging in different players over the last few years. We need to find someone that can play there every day and leave them there.

I thought Suttle did a pretty good job last year with both the glove and the bat.

Suttle didnt have a great arm? I would disagree there. He was a heck of a pitcher in HS with a great arm. Range might not have been as good as some but he made the plays. He even played 2B his Freshmen year I believe. He was way more than serviceable.

Suttle was a very good third baseman. Did he have the range of Maroul? No. But who does?

I agree that there is an art to playing third base that not everyone can pick up on, but I think it's important to have guys, especially infielders, who can play multiple positions. If this ridiculous schedule becomes the norm, versatile players will be all the more important.

Tucker was tried at third base already, and he never got comfortable there. He is great at second base, and because of that, I don't think he will be moving again. I don't know what the answer is at third, but it isn't Tucker.

T. R.,

hornian was 15 when Huston played at third. You have to forgive his youth and ignorance.

Not sure there's any real "art" or mystery to third. It's close to the batter and to the batter's left, meaning lots of action. One must be muy quick to field third and fearless to boot. Range is important because of the speed with which the ball gets to you. The throws are the most brutal in the game, besides catcher and RF, and are done more frequently and without benefit of crow hops and the like.

It makes sense that Preston would succeed at 3B. I guess its been a problem for us because it is a very tough position to play.

Oh yeah, I love me some David Maroul.
