Preferred walk-on kicker

He should be able to start if he can consistently kick it into the endzone or out every day in practice, then kick it to the ten or fifteen yard line in games like all the rest of our kickers do in actual games, not to be critical or anything.

His name is Ben Pruitt. I know nothing about him but he must be decent if he made the AA Game.

i second the comment on will russ's role if this kicker comes. w. russ is supposed to have a very strong leg (from his HS films). i was hoping (not that it matters what i think) that he could take over kick-offs from tucker--who as it turns out is a pretty good FG kicker.

Better 5 -8 yards deep into the end zone.

This is from the referenced article:
If you are considering taking a preferred walk on spot at a school, one important thing that you must try and receive is a guaranteed roster spot. Schools are allowed to bring in 85 football players during early August to begin preseason practice. Because there is a scholarship limit at all levels, there is no way that every single one of those players will be on scholarship. So that means walk ons have the potential to take some of those spots.

Surely this must be incorrect. Scholorship limits are 85 so how could there not be 85 scholorship players?
Searching the internet for one hour did not give me an answer however a couple of people said that the squad limit is 105. They did not seem reliable enough to link.

From the NCAA Manual:

This indicates walkons regardless of type can practice prior to their first school semester starting.

13.11.2.1 Preseason Practice and Competition. A student-athlete who is not enrolled, but who has been
accepted for admission to the institution in a regular full-time program of studies, shall be permitted to engage
in preseason practice and competition in fall sports or practice occurring in midyear between terms on the academic
calendar, provided such practice is not used to determine whether aid is to be awarded.

This states the 85 limit on "counters" receiving athletics financial aid:

15.5.6.1 Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] There shall be an annual limit of 25 on the number of initial
counters (per Bylaw 15.02.3.1) and an annual limit of 85 on the total number of counters (including initial
counters) in football at each institution. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/92, 12/15/06)

This confirms the 105 player limit for preseason practices:

17.9.2.1.2 Limit on Number of Participants—Bowl Subdivision. [FBS] In bowl subdivision football,
there shall be a limit of 105 student-athletes who may engage in practice activities prior to the institution’s
first day of classes or the institution’s first contest, whichever occurs earlier. (Adopted: 1/11/94, Revised:
12/15/06)

An interesting point - National Service Academies are NOT limited to 105 players at preseason practice for some unexplained reason.

I could find no reference to "preferred walk-on" in the NCAA manual.

There is a lot of interesting info there but it reminds me of my years spent interpreting EPA and OSHA regulations....in other words, it made my head hurt!

You can download the 2010-2011 NCAA Div 1 Manual here:

While justifying over signing last week, Steve Spurrier was quoted as saying schools are at a disadvantage if they don't. He later said the B10 doesn't and end up having to waste a few scholarships on "walk-ons".
