Remember that old 501 jeans commercial from about '90 "...cause in Prague, you can trade them for a car." and it had some guy trading his pants for a rusty old skoda?
We went to Prague last summer-- in fact, we watched the USA play the Czech Republic in World Cup soccer on two giant Jumbotrons in the Old Town square, it was freaking amazing.
The beer in the Czech Republic is fantastic, obviously, so I recommend you try as many different kinds at as many different places as possible. Here are a few of my favorites:
Klášterní pivovar Strahov (Strahov Monastery Brewery) - Is a brew-pub associated with an old monastery and is close to Prague Castle. Great beer and great food. I did a search on it and found this website: The Link
...which shows some other bars/restaurants/pubs as well, including another of my favorites:
Kolkovna - which is a Pilsner Urquell-owned restaurant in the Jewish Quarter. Good beer, and really good food, including twists on standard Czech food.
U Fleku Brewery and Restaurant - We went here on the recommendation of Chip McElroy (owner and brewer of Live Oak Brewery here in Austin). He told us that the beer was great, the food was okay, and the place was a tourist trap-- and he was right on all counts. If you end up going here and they bring by a round of pre-dinner shots, just keep in mind these two things: 1) They taste awful 2) They are NOT complimentary and they WILL show up on your bill, VERY expensive! But, the beer was well worth it, and they had an accordian player who took requests, so we got him to play "I've Been Working On The Railroad" and we were able to get the whole place singing "The Eyes" right there in the middle of Prague. The Link
Other than that, the public transportation is good-- they have street cars and subways that can get you just about anywhere. If you're into checking out architecture on trips like this, you should definitely check out Prague Castle and the cathedral next to it, which are great example of Gothic architecture.
Only Prague or are you able to do any side trips? If so, about and hour and a half away is Karlovy Vary. Its near the German border. Its a beautiul Victorian spa town, left undamaged by the war. In addition to the casino and great restuarants, it is the home of the Jan Becher distillery, maker of Becherovka.
Even if you can't make the side trip. Any restuarant in Prague should have it on their bar list.
Another beer to try is Krusovice - pure nectar. The brewery is also near Prague.
Mmmm Krusovice. That was probably my favorite of all the mainstream beers I drank over there.
But, I was also a big fan of Bernard, Branik, and of course the Pilsner Urquell and Budvar were even better there than they are here due to the effects of long-distance transportation.
One of my favorite cathedrals in the world is in Prague. Prague has much baroque architecture. The interior of the St. Nicholas cathedral is a very fine example of baroque architecture.
Symphonies are big there. They're everywhere. Day and night.
If you like art, there's some good galleries. My favorite galleries were near the palace before you walk up the incline. I have a nice watercolor of the st. nicholas cathedral on silk.
The jewish cemetary is very interesting. It's about an acre in size and about 10K people buried there.
Check out old town square. It has the astronomical clock. It's gorgeous at night. It's a huge square with baroque buildings surrounding it. They've installed lights that shine up on the buildings creating a very romantic setting.
Like the previous poster said, go to the charles bridge (karlov most) at night.
Go to the palace during the day and enjoy the view of the city.
You might think that prague is cheap. If you eat in the tourist area, the prices are steep. If you wander a couple blocks off the main tourist areas, the prices are much more reasonable.
Be prepared. Prague isn't a secret. It's swarmed with tourists.
LOVE Prague. Great times had. The beer, the museums, the cathedrals, the people ... you are going to have a blast. It has become a big tourist place though. Since it happens every hour and odds are you'll be there, check out the clock at Old Town Hall. It's not that big a deal ... but still something very Prague that should be done at least once.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I leave tomorrow or Thursday and will be back with a report next week. I am aware that Prague is not as cheap/a secret like it used to be but it should still be a great time.
