Pple in La, of course Texas plus Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina and Tennessee submitted petitions to secede.
According to infoo at link if 25.000 sign the petition by Dec 07 The BO admin has to respond.
some of the states petitions , like Texas, are not surprising but New York? New Jersey? Oregon? Colorado? Florida?

I like how the guy in Texas used the Declaration of Independence on whoch to base the petition

Of course these states won't actually secede but it is an interesting event.
edit to update it to all 50 states
people with too much time on their hands

Where is that map that shows how much each state has to spend because of massive Federal regulation and inability to come up with a reasonable immigration policy?

Or the map that shows how much natural and man made resources are contributing to overall US economy?

I know you are not so narrow to buy into everything revolves around taxes? Have you completely bought into that the priority for every good citizen is to pay their dear government for the privilege to be under its rule?

Where is that history text of how well this worked out in 1861?

Is it a coincidence that many of the same states are involved and most of them voted for Romney?

According to Yahoo News, this has happened before, both in 2004 and 2008. Personally, I support a state's right to secede. However, for me it's a "**** or get off the pot" issue. Don't send petitions and making loud public statements. Just do it. Have your legislature pass a resolution declaring independence, organize its own national government, nullify and ignore all federal laws, and evict all federal offices from the state (forcibly if necessary). If a state wants to do that, I'm all for it. However, if all we're going to do is have some grandstanding handjob like Rick Perry refer to it in speeches or send hollow petitions to the federal government, count me out. It's just a waste of effort and sounds stupid.

The bedwetters of 1861 were warned by Sam Houston about what was getting ready to happen to their dumb asses. Sam not being around today and the state being run by the equivalent of the secessionist idiots who took over back then, I will remind them that it was a calamitous idea then and it is now.

Obama is not my cup of tea and I have never voted for him but he is not an America hating muslim communist; he is a moderately liberal Ivy Leaguer who wants history to think well of him and so he is preserving the empire, treading water waiting for the economy to recover and trying to include the minorities, soon to be majorities, of non whites in the glorious train that is America.

The modern day bedwetters need to either get over it or move to some third world garbage dump and educate the locals on the joys of letting them run everything

You know, the revolutionaries who wanted freedom from the state, ie the royal family of England were called crazy too.

I for one am glad they were.

Doesnt mean the USA needs to split, but this kind of thing isnt without precedent.

Take this clown with you, will ya:

Texas pays something like $225b to the Federal government. We get something like 90 cents on the dollar back.

Yes, the idea is always laughed at, because secession is always associated with uneducated tea party people. And obviously no one really knows exactly how a state would go about actually seceding - BUT, anyone who scoffs at the idea in terms of sheer economics is an idiot.

Texas has something like the 20th largest GDP in the world. If all of the revenue paid to the federal government were to stay in Texas we could easily manage it. So could California and a couple other states.

We live in a new age. Facebook, Twitter, Smartphones...shared images, text messages. Everybody knows everything. No secrets. Look at the Arab Spring? Everything out in the open. No secrets.

If 24 states file for secession, what is the government going to do? Shoot everybody in the streets? Declare to the world we can't have our independence, or freedom, our self-determination from tyranny the same as an Arab state?

I don't want to live under Socialism. And I'm sick and tired of a fiat currency and debasement of the monetary system. It will be hilarious if scores of states start defying the whole rotten mess.

Knowing Austin, they'll want to declare secession from Texas and form a small socialist country right in the middle.

New York votes to secede.

Their governor has just asked the Feds for 30 BILLION dollars to rebuild after Sandy.

I say we say we let them secede and make the secession active RIGHT NOW.

Now there's over 74k signatures, but many if not more than half of them are from other states. How does that work? Why should people from other states sign on our petition.

The funny thing is that if people are trying to be snarky telling us to get out, the US economy would be worse off without us.

Not that I want to, but we have the right to secede. The govt does not have the right to kick anyone out of the country. Except you really don't care about anyone's rights but yours do you?

Here's an odd thing. I went to the web site and clicked for more information, and it said I'd already signed the petition.

But that was my first visit there. Strange.
