Pot/Planter gardening discussion

Ok I have a 600 Sq ft outdoor space with lots of planters and a 100 sq foot rasied brick "garden" area.

I want to grow stuff in the planters, specificially things like herbs and peppers.

In the "garden" I want to ahve tomatoes and asparagus and such.

it's not big and it will be my first attempt to grow things.

Any ideas or suggestions, caveats or tips?

Most of the above require significant sunlight.........what kind of sun exposure do you have?

There are too many varieties of tomatoes to list, so you'll have to research your region, and make your selection based on what does best in your area. I'm a big fan of "Celebrity" in Texas.

Peppers generally grow like weeds, so whatever you can find will probably work ---- sweet banana peppers and hot chili peppers are easy and rewarding. So are jalapenos.

Finally ---- its all about the soil. My favorite soil mix is an almost 50/50 mix of so-called "mushroom compost" and sheep manure.

Southern exposure very good sun for the city.

Cool i'm going to grow all those.

Can I get that at HD?

Be aware that, if you plant it, mint REALLY grows like a weed and will be everywhere. Put in some drought-tolerant flowers for some color. Like verbena or pinks. Be careful with verbena though, 'cause it likes to take over too.

As for peppers, I've had outstanding luck with Habaneros, Tobascos (not so great to cook with IMO), and Chile Pequins - and I haven't had problems with birds and peppers like I have with tomatoes and other fruit.

Cool i will try that. I will ahve no problems with birds, I have 2 dedicated bird control experts in residence.

HD will have something in the form of an "organic mix", and probably cow manure, not sheep.

Believe it or not, Wal-Mart, of all places, is where I get the above mentioned ingredients. The key is organic compost mixed with composted manure (cow or sheep) for nitrogen.

I ahve an herb garden that i've managed to maintain for two years... I lost a couple things to fungus last summer but all in all I've had good luck.

This may sound kinda "duh", but make sure you spend some time watering at least every other day... it's really easy to forget or just not have time...

Miracle Grow rules!!

I've had an easy time getting things to grow in just plain dirt by just tilling it and then adding poo poo on top-- I buy Dillo Dirty but I doubt you can find that in NY... any good ol home depot poo'll do.

I bet your garden is already in decent shape-- but if you have a lot of weeds that you need to get rid of, buy a Garden Claw. (yeah.. the stupid thing from the commericals... you can get em for about 25 bucks at walmart, prob. home depot) Those things are great b/c they get rid of ALL of the weeds, complete with the root, and can be used in between plants. If you happen to accidentally pull up a good plant with it, you can just re-plant it.

I've had enormous success growing oregano, rosemary, sage, lavender, and basil, but I lost one of the sage bushes and the lavender to fungus last summer.

We also have a jasmine vine that grows beside the steps up to our porch, and i LOVE that thing. It was there when we moved in, and just about a month ago I decided I wanted to put up some trelless (spelling??) to make it grow up the side of the house. It's now growing like MAD, and it's blooming a lot longer than it did last year. Nothing you can buy at the store smells half as good as real jasmine, and it seems to be bringing lots of good creatures in too, like lizards to eat the bugs.

I'm very jealous of your Garden!!

Thanks for the input. Yeah I need to get tools and I'll get a claw.

" bet your garden is already in decent shape"

Problem is his was mostly flowers and I want vegetables and such so I have to change everything out.

I'm thinking of doing all the herbs in separate pots to try and control the weeds?

I will try Jasmine. The raised garden thing has some trellises above the fence, any suggestions for that?

Oh and I love arugala, I must have fresh arugala
