Big 12 Awards out

Rori - Defensive Player of the year
Vic - Coach of the year
Shaylee - Newcomer of the year

Harmon and Gaston first team All-Big 12.
Shaylee - 2nd team

Amina - All freshman team.

That’s truly a shocker to me. Enough new coaches in the league to dilute the petty?

I did note that neither Rori or Deyona were unanimous first team. Deyona, well o.k. There were a lot of good players in the league this year. But Rori? Led the conference in assists and assist to turnover ratio and was #2 in steals. My spouse reminds me over and over that Kami Ethridge was an All-American while averaging fewer than 10 points a game because of the way she led her team. Rori was the undisputed leader of the top team in the Big 12.

I think, given the animosity toward Texas and OU, this was as good an outcome as we could have expected. Rori got the respect she deserves, as did Deyona and Shaylee. And Amina on the freshman team! As has been noted here, Vic did a hell of a job with a hobbled team and, lo and behold, was recognized for it. Go 'Horns!

Looks like fifth time's a charm for A. Joens. She's a really good player but I'll say this... If Rori doesn't shoot the ball well how does she still impact the game? If Joens doesn't shoot the ball well how does SHE still impact the game? Nuff said...

Congrats to all!

Lots to be happy about. Especially happy that Lexi Donarski did not repeat as Defensive POY; biggest joke on last season's awards list.

You and Danny are on the same page…

Too bad Sonya Morris and Taylor Jones were limited in their appearances, otherwise they'd be somewhere amongst those honored. Let's hope that leads to motivation for big performances in KC.

When you win the conference, you pick up some votes that otherwise would go against you. Vic's award is for managing a team with injuries and such a small bench. It is well deserved. Rori is our engine but she will have one game every so often when she cannot hit a basket.

This is very true about Rori. I refer, however, back to my previous statement even when she doesn't shoot well, she still impacts the game in several different ways.... assists, steals, relentless defensive pressure, rebounding, and running the team. When Ashley Joens doesn't shoot the ball well, how does she impact the game?

For those keeping track, Vic has some performance incentive payments in his contract which include:
-$50,000 for a Big 12 regular-season or tournament championship,
-$20,000 for conference coach of the year honors.

So he's earned a 70k bonus in the last couple of days with another 50k possible this week. Plus Taylor bought him a bunch of snacks for his birthday. ;)

I've been wanting to say something, but have been hesitant because I don't intend to diminish our players' recognition. But here goes: there were two outstanding newcomers to the conference with one making first team and the other making second team. However, the newcomer who was named to the second team is the one who was named Newcomer of the Year. Make that make sense... because in my mind either the player who was tabbed NOY should have been first team, or the player who made first team should've been the NOY.
Just sayin'...:idk:

Sometimes it is just politics.

When I assisted at a smaller HS in south Texas, our girls BB team was far, far superior to every other team in the district. We're talking a group who completely outclassed our opponents, on the order of Jody's best teams in the 80s against the rest of the SWC. And yet, when the coaches got together to determine all district selections, we were careful to acknowledge the better players on other teams in some way. (There were a handful of girls in the district who would have been contributors for us, but absent the coaching our girls received, they wouldn't have been starters).

In truth, our five starters could have been justifiably chosen the 5 first team all district selections. As it was, we placed 3 on the first team, plus defensive player of the year (given 2nd team honors) and another second teamer. We just weren't willing to rub the other coaches face in it like we could have.

If that type of politics happens in high school, where talent disparities are greater than what is seen in Power 5 college ball, I suspect it played some role in how Big XII honors were awarded too.

Best quote ever: "Coach Gerlich and Texas Tech led the Big 12 in technical fouls and middle fingers given to opposing fans. Is there an award for that?"

Gerlich is a real POS. Have seen zero sportsmanship and zero class from her. I presume the lubbockites like her but she is an embarrassment to almost any university other than tech.

Yep she’s the darlin of L-town. “She has the program headed in the right direction” is the mantra. They were all hyped with that non conference record totally oblivious the SOS was almost 300. They also think she’s a clothes horse with all that Hobby Lobby crap she wears on game day. They are eating it all up

Let's take a look at those final conference records, shall we?

Year Conf. Place Conf. Record Win Pct.
'20-'21: 7th 5 - 13 .278
'21-'22: 8th 4 - 14 .222
'22-'23: 8th 6 - 12 .333

Also, I just found a really interesting article on the queen of the desert dumpster fire. When she was hired in 2020, here is what she said:
"I believe that Texas Tech is a pot of gold for every sport, and that's illustrated by how well each program succeeds on a national level year in and year out. There is no reason that Lady Raider basketball can't do that too, because we've already seen it done. We know we have the support, and I am looking forward to bringing that positive excitement and authentic love for the program back to my alma mater." WOW! Are you freaking kidding me???

One other interesting note from the article: "During the search process, Gerlich brought up her 2015 public intoxication charge in which she served a two-game suspension while coaching at UT-Arlington, according to KAMC Sports Director David Collier. Hocutt said he felt satisfied Gerlich had learned her lesson and 'has continued to grow as a coach, role model and mentor to her student athletes.'" Yeah Kirby. She sure is one heckuva role model. Now we know where they get it from.

Also, interesting details on what they are paying for this absolute sh*t-show:

Musing … Weird that Tech had such less-than-admirable coaches. Hocutt must not have a lot of emotional intelligence or awareness, or can’t sell The school/Lubbock. TT is a decent university - medical, vet and law schools plus some interesting nationally recognized programs in climate and environmental science. It’s not UT, but it’s not a diploma mill. Tech folks/fans live in the past , when they could win with kids from small towns, mostly in West Texas, IMHO. Must be a culture shock for kids from other places. Just pondering …

My favorite is her "Dale Evans Inspirational" piece with the stars on it.
:lmao:

In fairness to Hocutt and tech, I believe they got a good one in Joey Maguire for football. He was phenominal at Cedar Hill and he has worked for 2 very good Baylor coaches. Still amazing the job Ruhl did there and Aranda is also a good coach. Gerlich is just a walking disaster who happens to be making a lot of money.
