I was there for the 1st time with a car. Drove from Palm Springs wed/thur to get out of that scene for a few days. I thought it would be cool to have a car there and get to see some stuff like you have listed. I parked it in the garage at MGM and never even thought about getting back in it till we left. It is such a pain to even get to and from the parking garage. They are all free, which makes sense.....why would a casino charge you to come in and give them $$$$. I would take the tram from IP/Harrah if you are staying at the Venetian to go downtown to see freemont st. Very easy.

As far as renting a car though....try priceline....all the fees are included in your bid. That way you dont have to pay for the cab and can go out to see the Hoover damn.

Even better, try kayak.com. Navigating the strip is a pain in the ***, especially on the weekends, so avoid it and take the back roads, which at one point i knew by memory, but they are convenient and all lead to the free casino parking garages. Cabs are a complete waste of money in Vegas, especially if you get a scheisty cabby and he decides to drive you down the strip. Most of that time is spent in gridlock. The monorail is really inconvenient, and the Venician train is pretty good, but sounds like you won't get much use of it from where you are staying

The one time I rented a car in Vegas (my first trip), we used it to drive to/from the airport and on the first day only. It was such a pain in the *** to get to/from the casino parking that we ended up using cabs the rest of the time -- it just wasn't worth it to drive. Perhaps you could rent the car just for the day you want it for the Hoover Dam trip? May be too much hassle to get out to the rental car place on that one day, though. Just a thought.

Agreed on the backroads, though. The streets parallel to the strip all have entrances to the casino lots and such, and the traffic is so much better.

Advantage is just another rentacar company...low end.

I would book through priceline you can bid you own price. or see what they are offering as well from the major carriers. i would say to go to the site and see what is being offerered and put a bid in for 30% less per day. I have used it quite a bit and it is great.

dollar is who we use. The rental car lot is a 5-10 minute busride now to a huge offsite campus. It is right off the south side of the strip though and easy to get back to when returning the car. Side roads are easy to navigate and you can avoid a lot of traffic. If you want the freedom to go downtown or casino hop it ends up being way cheaper than cabs.

come to think of it there was a dollar rental deal in the MGM Grand parking garage.....so would ask the concierge at the Venetian.

Don't rent from from the car rental desk at your hotel. They'll sign you in and put you on a shuttle to the rental lot at the airport.

Renting at the airport is easy and quick, so just keep your reservation and you don't have to mess with (or pay for) cabs to and from the airport.

I've got a friend who drove to Vegas as part of a roadtrip. He mentioned something about 'right turns on red' are illegal in Vegas'... and he got a ticket because of it. It makes sense in a pedestrian city, but I was still a little surprised he got a ticket. Just be careful with that.

We use the main car rental facility near the airport.

It's easier to drive around Vegas than it is in Austin, if you know where you are going.

As noted, avoid the Strip Friday & Saturday nights. Koval is a good parallel road to use in lieu of the Strip. Stay off the I-15 at rush hour.

Valet park at most Strip hotels, it's free - but be sure & tip a couple bucks when they bring your car out. However, on big event nights valet parking is sloooow. We like to self park at Bill's (formerly the Barbary Coast) - great location, free, quick access to the casino & Strip.

When returning cars to the main facility, you can check your luggage in right there for a $20 fee (for Southwest Air flights). That is worth it if you are departing on a Sunday when the airport is crazy crowded.

The monorail sucks, from what I hear (located waaaay in the back of the hotels on the east side of the Strip).

I've rented cars in Vegas lots of time. Yes getting around on the strip is a hassle, but being able to get off strip is worth it. Heck you may save $50 just from beer and liquor runs off the strip. I hated the monorail.
