well mack has said a class of 15-18 this year. by my estimate, we have 83 ships now, 13 seniors, which leaves 70 ships accounted for by next signing period. (thus the "15" number by mack i'm sure). we'll have attrition, you can bank on it. a few names hae been rumored for months. i'm going to start with 18, but suspect more like 21 by next Feb.

QB: (1) Gilbert.
RB: (1 or 2) Whaley. Looking at Richardson, Wood,
FB: (0 or 1) No clear targets
WR: (1 or 2) Timmons. Looking at Blake
TE: (2) Matthews, Graham.
OL: (3 or 4) Porter, Kelley, Ashcraft. Offer to Walters.
DE: (3 or 4) Jones, Okafor, Kriegel (? DT). Offer to Kennard
DT: (2) Offer to McFarland, Howell . Looking at Dent
LB (2 or 3) Nkwopara, Allen. Looking at Williams, Mahoney, McAllister
DB: (3 or 4) Davis, Barnett, Vaccaro. Offered Brent, Kirkpatrick
K/P: (0) No need
ATH (0 or 1) Offer to Pratt

Good breakdown.
I see about 20, so 21 I think is very similar. However, I do not see a FB in this class unless there is a bad *** out there, and I am not sure that there is. So if you take the FB out, i am with you at 20. I don’t see a very good TE in Texas in terms of rankings so my guess is that we wait until one emerges or try to go OOS (rare).

I think I'd rather drop to 1 receiver and pick up another TE or DE. Without picking up a TE in 08, that gives us room for probably 2 in 09. With our history at that position, its always a posibility to move one over to OL or another position if he doesn't pan out at TE.

And DE is a HUGE need for 09. I'm gonna assume that Dravannti Johnson stays at LB. If that's the case, we'll only have 4 scholarship DE's returning next season: Houston, Jones, Acho, and Carter.

Then again, it wouldn't be easy to turn down Emory Blake and Greg Timmons if they both wanted to come here. I just think that TE and DE are very key positions for 09.

to address the above thoughts.. i recall in mack's press conference that he said a FB would be probably signed in this class. he also mentioned something about TE being well stocked (maybe the youngsters are develping more than we thought), and that not being as much of a priority. agree DE is a priority, b/c who knows how long guys like Eddie Jones or Lamarr Houston will stay with their talent.

Colt,
time for an update on your first post on this page.
Add Ashcraft!!!!!!!

Mack said that the TE's are "well stocked"?????

I trust him, but this just seems silly. IMO, this is the weakest position on the team, even more than DT. Blaine Irby has shown some potential in limited playing time, but that's all it is! Potential! If he doesn't pan out like we expect, we are in a world of hurt at that position, IMO. Perhaps Josh Marshall could emerge, but I think it's silly to say that we are "well stocked" at that position.

Then again, I don't attend practices.

i think Howard will play TE and the schollie #s are pretty stocked there.
Unless there is a really good one out there, and there does not appear to be, i am ok with not getting a TE this year.

Looks good to me. If we only get 1 QB then that would be 20. I do think Mack gets 4-5 OL this year and there is plenty of talent in-state this year plus he already has 3. Agree that DE and DT are major priorities. Don't know if Mack will be able to find 4 DT's though. McFarland and Okafor would be great additions and go to those 2 positions of need. McAllister and Moss could shore up the LB position. Chris Williams could be recruited at LB as well. I would like Mack to take 2 DE's, 3 DT's, and 3 LB's.

I pretty much agree with the position breakdown. Right now, I only see one defensive tackle and one defensive end we're really pushing for, but since the lines are always a priority, I'm sure Mack has some more defensive linemen targeted.

shirt year = redshirt

i dont think we get 4 DBs this year, we have had 2 straight classes with many DBs. i think we get 2. others we get might be listed at DB but will play LB in college.

With all the offers going out it was time for an update:

QB: (1) Gilbert
RB: (2) Whaley , targeting Baker
FB: (1)
WR: (2) Timmons, targeting Blake
TE: (1)
OL: (4) Porter, Kelley, Ashcraft, targeting Walters
DE: (2) targeting Okafor, Kennard
DT: (3) targeting McFarland, Barrera
LB (3) targeting Chris Williams, Moss
DB: (4) Davis, targeting Dre Kirkpatrick, Vaccaro, Brent, Loston
K/P: (0)
ATH: (1) targeting Shepard, Pratt

Okafor, McFarland, Shepard, Blake, Loston, Pratt were all in on 1st junior day and I believe Okafor, McFarland, Shepard have received offers already.

Walters, McAllister, Moss, Vaccaro, Barrera, many others will be here for Junior day on 2/24.

From what I have read Vaccaro is a commit at this point but it will be official after next junior day. I hope Mack nails down 2 LB's and 3 DL or DE's after next junior day as well.

list updated today with the way i see it. LB is a concern to me... don't know if chris williams will get a look from us. moss apparently is an ou lean. hope we can get tariq allen and maybe mcallister this weekend.

Good job Colt! I think we are going to have a top class in 2009! I just hope we can get a few good defensive linemen and linebackers.

with 10 commits, several offers out, and so many more big names on the board... i'm really wishing we could take closer to 22 or 23 this year..

Walters was easily the most impressive looking athlete out there on Saturday, although not as tall as his Rivals profile since he is more than an inch shorter than Nader. I hope we get him to finish out the OL class.

I 2nd that on Walters.

Mack continues to bring in great OL every year. The future is extremely bright with Burnette, Allen, Hix, Huey, McGaskey, Buchanan, Snow, and now Ashcraft, Porter, and possibly Walters. The 3 are the oldest as sophomores and sets up a great situation for this years OL who will be able to come in with a great senior class ahead of them. They shouldn't be pressured to play or start right off and can learn from some great players.
