Port of LA bans dirty trucks

Sorry to bump if no one is interested. Relevance here was in terms of air quality. LA listed as #1 city in terms of poor air quality. Houston is #4 and Dallas/Ft Worth is listed #7. Thus anyone know if the port areas surrounding Houston have anything progressive going on to reduce air pollution and increase air quality?

Nothing so far as I've heard..The mayor of Houston has been really aggressive w/ the refineries by the ship channel and even pasadena about decreasing their pollution, but that's about it.

Would this also be to keep Mexican trucks out of the port or does this not have anything to do with that?

I know that the Teamsters are trying to do everything they can to keep the Mexican drivers from providing a cheaper (but much less safe) alternative to US truckers.

wonder how much pollution is created/resources wasted by deposing of older tucks in the dump to rot while cutting trees/using oil/strip mining to manufacture newer 'better' trucks? I swear no one thinks about conservation now a days. It is all about some formulaic process of going ‘green’ and saving the planet by putting all their efforts in to stopping just one problem and not even caring about the others.

Pip there are many ways to do these things. Some of the trucks can be retrofitted. New trucks purchased can be the ones the comply with the newer emission standards. In the very least setting some standards and making improvements in air quality has to be a big concern. The issue here is air quality which causes major costs to the public in terms of public health.

Your argument could be made similarly for all vehicle emission standards. I think in the end you want vehicles that conserve fewer resources but also have better emissions. Dirty trucks are a real problem and one that too often gets a pass.

wife and i went to catalina island for her birthday. the boat leaves from long beach port. man, the air behind us looked so incredibly disgusting. you don't notice it living in los angeles (although i live in south bay) but that was really gross. glad to see they're taking steps to clean it up.
