Popcorn

Not that Bob

Sometimes mine turns out fine, other times it is "tough," not crisp. I think I am cooking it the same way each time, but evidently not.

Do tell me your popcorn popping secrets.

You have to stand by the microwave and listen. When the popping slows down to only 1 every 3 or 4 seconds, it's done.

Here is what I have found:

* oil . . . use canola oil. Olive oil makes for horrible popcorn. Can't speak to corn oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, etc., but canola oil works great.

* use a round-bottomed chef's pan. Seriously. It makes all the difference in the world. I have no idea why, but the switch from flat-bottomed to round-bottomed (both Calphalon commercial hard-anodized) probably doubled the quality of my popcorn.

* cook on high

* use about 6" diameter puddle of oil largely filled by a single layer of popcorn.

Try it.

When I was a kid my dad made the best popcorn in the world....

Don't use to much oil....

But this is the key....

Anyone ever have a problem popping in the microwave. If i use pop secret, it pops to perfection at a set length of time, yet, when i use orville redenbacher's, it overcooks. Anyone have this problem, or is my microwave f'in with me?

First of all, I use the Whirley Pop

It works really well and the only time I have had difficulty with it is when I have stale kernels or too much moisture in my kernels to start. You also can't just grab the store brand kernels, you have to spring for the OR's.
I also use canola oil, but only about a tablespoon or two. It only takes about 3-5 minutes depending on if you have gas or electric burners.
Then, I coat the inside of a large bowl with butter (with South Beach we are using Smart Balance) and then sprinkle Garlic Salt and Parmesan Cheese all over the "butter". Once the popcorn is through popping, I pour it in the bowl and mix it up! Winning concoction!

The only reason I don't use real butter is because I am too lazy to make the popcorn. So I guess I'll live with Smart Balance if Mrs. R is going to make it.

Oh, and am I the only one who loves buttered popcorn that has been sitting out over night. Man, that's good stuff!

Kind of Blue,

What on earth would give you THAT idea?

I have gone from "what am I going to drink this weekend," to "What am I going to grill this weekend?"
In all fairness, with the extent to which we love food, we should both look like those fat twins on that motorcycle in the Guiness Book of World Records.

A wok with a lid works pretty good too.

Do they still sell that popcorn in that aluminum pan that you shake on the stove? I thought that was the **** when I was a kid.

I think most every garage sale I've ever seen had a hot air popcorn maker right next to a broken Mr. Microphone and the Amazing Slice-a-matic. I'm not sure exactly what that means, cause I know many swear by them.

I hear that microwave popcorn causes death in rats. I don't know if thats just rats in the microwave at the same time as the popcorn or what. No matter; I never liked rats much anyway.

I nearly burned down my house making a Jiffy Pop. I was only eleven and left that sucker on the stove and forgot about it. Ole Jiffy caught fire and did some damage to the kitchen cabinets. Ah, I remember that beating like it was yesterday
