Popcorn Ceiling Removal

I purchased my first home on Friday and on Saturday began the funtastic project of removing the popcorn texture on the ceilings. We're almost finished scraping the junk of the ceiling so I'm thinking about the next phase.

I've been told that we can just mud over any rough spots or joints, sand and paint for a flat ceiling surface. I am getting a little nervous about this as I have ZERO experience in this kind of stuff.

Have any of you done this before? Should I hire a professional to finish the ceilings with texture or attempt this on my own? I'd rather do it myself but don't want to be in over my head.

Any thoughts, recommendations or experiences in this would be helpful...

i would spray some kind of texture....i did the flat look on a room in the old house and wasn't impressed.

Unless you're a really, really seasoned pro, you don't want to try a tape / float by yourself; it will look too uneven.

The minimum you want is a texture called (either) Orange Peel or Grapefruit Peel. The orange version is slightly smaller in the "grain" than the grapefruit... you'll also see these textures on walls as well.

You can also get a texture called "California Drag" & the old way this was achieved is to use a thicker texture compound & put a shopping bag over your hand (or a bread bag to get coverage down your arm) & do a sorta "pull & twist" move. Nowadays, they sell do it yourself kits @ Big Orange Box.

You might be able to find examples of these on the intertoobs.

If you need a painter to do any of these, send me a PM; I can recc a few names for you.

I've read that you can just prime and paint over the sheetrock as long as you don't mess up any of the joints or gouge the sheetrock. Is that the case or do you have to apply mud over the sheetrock?

Pretty much all the joints in the ceiling are unharmed as we have been careful scraping - the tape and mud are still on the joints.

I wonder what the cost would be to hire someone to spray textue on all the ceilings of a 1800 sq foot house?
