POP3 email account

I would like to set up an email account that can be accessed from Outlook and so my email address is not dependent on my internet provider.

I would probably need a fair amount of storage capacity as I frequently receive attachments related to my work.

Does anybody know of a reliable provider of this type of email account?

re Gmail - I don't believe they allow you to use outlook to access your email and I am not sure that I am comfortable with their privacy policy.

Thanks.

I have not used them for POP mail, but I believe POBox.com is now handling all the mail forwarding for UT's alumni account service.

You might also consider establishing your own domain with a hosting company and using that for email as well as web hosting; you'll just want to choose one that is reliable. I'm no longer recommending mine because I am tired of explaining issues to the tech staff.

Well, you really only have two options:

Pay a service like Yahoo or Gmail (gmail promised this) to have pop3 access. Yahoo charges $20/yr.

Follow MilkmanDan's advice and buy your own domain and have a webhost set up an email server for you.

The benefit of going with Yahoo or Gmail is real. Their servers are incredibly reliable. You'll be lucky if you get a host who manages your email server who comes close to the reliability of Yahoo or hotmail or Gmail. Also, Yahoo and Gmail aren't going anywhere.

There is a huge benefit to running your own email server. You can set up a catchall system. This is great. It dramatically reduces spam. The idea is that you have your own domain and any email sent to any address in that domain gets sent to your inbox. You can make up any email address and have it work. If you want to sign up for espn fantasy football but are worried about spam, sign up under the email address [email protected]. If that address starts getting spam, you know who to blame and it is easy to block it permanently. You don't have to go through the hassle of setting up a new email address anytime you sign up for something. Anything you make up just works. If you have 1 email address per signup (say hornfans@mydomain, amazon@mydomain, fantasyfootball@mydomain) it is easy to track where your spam is coming from. You can sign up and recieve email from automated systems without ever having to mix those email addresses with the one(s) that you give to people.

I am not sure I wish to consent to Gmail's privacy policy but of course I may have to at some point. I am trying to explore my other options.

If I have a webhosting company setup an email server what would my hardware requirements look like?

Can you recommend a reliable company?

Thanks for the help.

There is a free program called yahoopops that will let you use Outlook with Yahoo. Somebody developed the same thing for GMail. Just google for yahoopops or GMail POP. Can't vouch for the GMail but yahoopops works like a charm.
