Police Scanners

Anyone ever owned one? I was thinking about the hand held ones so I could take it to work. All kinds of police activity around our office. Can you really get that much info from them?

It's tough to listen to big city PD's because they use frequencies that are constantly shifting (I think it's called truncation). Small towns are a different story. When I'm bored (which is often) I'll fire up the scanner and listen to what's going on.

it depends on what type of radios your city uses. i have a radioshack pro-91 trunktracker, that would follow conversations very well. but my city upgraded from motorola type 1 or 2 to the newer, digital ericson system. so i can't use it anymore here. there is a scanner that follows the digital system, but it's about $500.
