OK so this is a hot thing now. My wife and sons are totally into it and spent several hours today at the mall getting their Poke-whatnots.

Tonight at dinner they made me get an account. So I am PokeHornFan if you’re in the neighborhood.

Do you play? What is this thing anyway?

I'm a much bigger fan of Pokemon: Go...away
:smile1: I know ... one thing I’ve seen that’s good about it is that you have to get out and walk around to collect stuff, and so it gets the kids moving. Our boys went with us to the dog park yesterday morning and walked a couple miles while playing, so they got a little exercise and had some fun in the process.

While it IS getting them out and moving, they are so glued to their phone that I question how much actual human interaction is going on. Or whether we are going to be creating a generation that continues to be distracted by the...oh look, a shiny object

^^^ This.

My wife and I have been imploring our college age sons for years about limiting time on the Internet / phone. We point out the distraction & time wasted plus they are missing out on life and a big world out there.

Both sons are very bright, make terrific grades, have a good work ethic, very respectful, etc. but largely due to the Internet, their interpersonal / social skills and social interests are poor. We fear this will harm them in some ways from finding a good mate to interviewing for good job(s).

Maybe we worry too much, I dunno....

I am reminded of Marshall McLuhan and his perspective on TV back when TV was relatively new. By it's very nature, the medium changes the way people interact with the world. It's probably neither good nor bad, but like TV, it needs to be monitored in how it is used.

I play to bond with my 17yr old son. He and his friends have spent multiple nights at a popular downtown park lately chasing Pokémon. He's motivated to train more for Cross Country since he can "hatch" Pokemon eggs by running more KM. This isn't a bad thing at all.

I knew there had to be someone! :smile1:

I think we do. My wife and I got interested in gaming when they did, and we play a few different things with them. I think most people would be surprised at how much kids can learn, and different skills they develop, doing something that may appear to be a frivolous waste of time. There are some studies that suggest this as well — cognitive skills, spatial navigation, reasoning, strategic thinking, memory and perception, dispute resolution (among game teams), and problem solving.

It also helps to talk a lot with them about what they are doing, and show a genuine interest. They seem to appreciate that.
