Pogo and recruiting

Quoting Pogo: We have met the enemy, and they is us.

Have we considered that the sometimes orgasmic response to 'landing' a highly-ranked recruit raises a couple more questions?

1. Assuming that the coaching staff pays some attention to rankings, and assuming also that the big cigars have only the published (and touted) rankings to go on, should we - fans, coaches, cigars, and all - make a concerted effort to ignore rankings and perhaps free up our coaches to recruit based on their true observations and feelings?

2. Does our own jubilation over the 'landing' of a highly-rated recruit just set us up for a trip down the primrose path to disappointment - and don't we, rather than admit we were fooling ourselves, lay the blame on the coaches who might, just might, have been on the path with us?

Just asking.

Aren't the coaches already "free" to recruit who they want?
Are the coaches paying too much attention to the rankings?

Interesting thought(s)

Most people I talk with about this say "well everyone would have signed (fill 4-5 star name here)". While probably true we seem to have far more highly ranked players fail than our competition and FAR FAR less of our marginal signings pan out.

Evaluation? Coaching?

Somebody's talent evaluation stinks when the last 2 Heisman trophy winners came from this state and we turned both down. As well as 3 All Big 12 OL's.
