i got this 4gb flash drive to back up some files and i can't acces it. it's the PNY optima pro attache.
my computer recognizes it and says it is funtioning properly (in device manager), but i can't seem to open it and use it.
i'm computer challenged obviously, so any advice would be appreciated.

yeah, i've tried that. i have a bunch of "removable drive x" but none of them are pciking up the PNY.

It may not specifically say "PNY" in the drive name. Access some of the ones that are showing up and see if they are the one you are looking for.

Also, if you are seeing other "Removable Drives" present in the list, that means you have some other drives plugged in. The computer may not be assigning it a drive letter that you can see. Remove any other USB drives that you have plugged in and re-insert the PNY drive. It may/should show up then. If that is the case, and you need to access all of them at the same time, you will need to go into Administrative settings>drives and assign them each a unique drive letter.

oaky, let me try that - be back in a few!!
(i have clicked on each of those drives, by the way, and it says "insert disk into drive x")...

I got to warn you, be careful with that thing. The chip in the PNY I have broke out of the casing from inserting it and pulling it out so many times. Happened to a friend of mine too. It still works but I just know one day it will get dust or something in it and I will lose everything.

Check your drive mappings.

Windows maps storage devices of over 2 gigs in size to either E: or F:

If something is already mapped to that letter, then Windows will tell you it instaklled properly but you will not see it in My Computer.

Go to START--> RUN and type in COMPMGMT.MSC and press enter.

Go to disk management and look for the volume/drive and right click and select change drive letter.

In the next window, select the volume and hit the change button.

Should bring up a pull down you can select U or V or some othe unused letter. Hit Okay.

here's where i really show my ***!!
my start menu doesn't have a "run" option

Go to Start - All Programs - Accesories - Command Prompt

When the prompt comes up, type...

COMPMGMT.MSC

Then press enter, and follow the steps Dan said.

*Alternatively, you can go to Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management

There are many ways to get to the DOS prompt, so let us know if none of these work for you. I assume you're running Windows?

you guys are awesome!
okay, so i go there and i get the list of drives and the PNY is in drive G, apparently.
I should right click that drive and change it to one that shows up in my computer? like "y"?

Yes, change to one that another volume/drive is not listed as.

I always use X, Y or Z, as those are never alloted for anything.
