Plonsky has to be looking

Coaches around the country have to be looking at Texas out of the corner of their eye right now. This is all so sad. Many of us saw it coming last year; but hitting the bottom still hurts.

I'm kinda wondering why people weren't complaining during the last years of Jody's coaching career. She really wasn't that competitive at all after Texas joined the Big XII except the years that Jamie Carey fell luckily ended up at Texas.

Could it be because Jody wrote her own ticket with the success and contributions she's made to Texas and WBB?

Goestenkors, on the other hand, was hired to revive the Texas program. Simply put, the job isn't being done. Just because she's earning $1.06 million a year does not excuse this Coach from performing.

If anything, Plonsky ought to be looking around herself as well!

SEATTLE

Given that she has finally pulled the trigger on the soccer coach, I'm willing to believe that this might be a trend. Maybe LHN really was taking too much of her attention. Regardless of the reason, GG is gone. Clark is on notice.

We hold Coaches too long, when they are not getting the job done!
We Are Texas!
Remember!

I'm surprised no one remembers the vitriolic comments posters on this board made about Jody during the last 2 or so years of her tenure. And during that time, Plonsky essentially said that Jody would be the coach as long as she wanted to be the coach, and that she trusted Jody's committment to the program to make the right decision at the right time.

Plonsky may be keeping her eyes open, it would be the wise thing to do, but Kirk Bohls recently stated that per Plonsky Goestenkor's position is not in jeopardy. I expect she'll be here until her contract runs out. Regardless of what posters on the board think. I wish her the best, I hope the young women on the team can end their season with some success. But these games have become too painful to watch.

Ditto about the Jody bashing, it was unconscoinable...

As for GG, I wouldn't be totally surprised if she headed to the west coast area, but I am ambivalent as to whether or not I am hoping that will happen....part of me is still hopeful, part of me is just bewildered and discouraged....this déjà vu thing is just so sad!!

I, too, just don't understand the team's lack of success in the last few years. I didn't expect GG to have an immediate positive impact but I did think there would be steady improvement, especially when the players were ones she had recruited. I'm not sure the blame lays at the feet of the coaching staff for not developing the chemistry necessary to be successful, the players who don't seem to give a rip, or both. I suppose recruiting, or lack thereof, could factor into it. Look at Tennessee. They recruit like gangbusters and sign blue chippers but are having a lousy year (for them) and we know Pat knows how to coach. I think GG needs a couple more years and if she has not turned the ship around then she needs to make a graceful exit.

Buying success is not guaranteed. Texas should find an up-and-coming coach that fits in well with the program, the University and the history of the team. No reason to spend a million dollars .... Texas has been made a mockery and we're irrelevant now in WBB.

Why not try a man as the Coach!
The Kentucky coach would be great!
And keep R.Hughley with him.

Just because someone has FF appearances, that doesn't mean it will translate into success going forward. If that was the case then GG would be in a different situation. I'd like to see UT take a chance at a young up-and-comer that's hungry to prove themselves and has a nice pedigree. And quit giving out 7 year contracts. That has got to be the stupidest thing ever. Do you really think someone wouldn't jump at the chance to coach at UT with a 5 year contract?

It doesn't prove anything other than the fact that they know how to get there. It hasn't been too many other active coaches not named GG geno or pat and a select few that have been there multiple times. I just personally wouldn't want to take a chance on someone at this level to try and coach us to somewhere they've never been. Just my opinion

I would also prefer coach Waltz, because he built a program from nothing. And he's played in a conference thats very similar to the b12 because every night in the big east is a war against a tough opponent. I also like his style, he reminds me of a male version of Kim Mulkey because of his coaching demeanor.

ISU 71 UT 56 ... we're not even close to competitive in the B12.

Time to move on ... I don't care if she has a 70 year contract ... she ain't gettin' the job done.

First, Goestenkors is a good coach. She proved it at Duke. She built that program, which had one NCAA appearance tool before she got there (and regularly finished in the bottom of the ACC) into a national powerhouse and the third best program in women's basketball from 1999 until 2007. She went 5-4 against Tennessee and 2-2 against UConn while at Duke, defeating both in NCAA Tournaments to reach Final Fours. She finished first or second in the ACC every year from 1999 until 2007, with three undefeated regular seasons in league play and five ACC Tournament Titles. She made four Final Four appearances. And her players got better.

I do not know why Texas is not at least top four each year in the Big 12. My guess is that Goestenkors underestimated how much she could rely on the Duke name/degree as a "closer" in a recruiting sales pitch. Yes, she built the program, but she could always rely on a top five/top ten academic ranking as part of the overall sales pitch after she made her basketball sales pitch. I think not having that has hurt her, as I do not believe she realized how much Duke academics and the school's reputation in the non-basketball world was able to help her.

Apologis for spelling/grammar, as I am doing this quickly on my iPad.

Yea, I am sure she is closing recruits with that Duke Pedigree!

Look at me I coached at Duke!!

You might want to look at the education one receives at the University of Texas, it may not quite be of the same calibur as Duke or Stanford but nothing to shake a stick at. Oh by the way it is in Austin Texas, not Durham NC.

She is not getting the job done, send her back to Durham.

Top to bottom the BigXII is the toughest confernce in the nation, but she is getting paid to step up her game. She has every tool imaginable at her disposal, the job is not getting done.

Gail's fortunes at Texas are heavily impacted by two bad decisions made at the onset
1) Not keeping any assistant coach with ties to Texas
2) Being off with the Olympic team during the first round of recruiting.
None of these things can be fixed at this point it's water under the bridge.

I've said over and over this team is fundamentally bad I believe you start making the team better by getting a damn point guard in that can run the offense, limit turnovers, penetrate & dish, and make an entry pass to the post beyond that ridiculous lob pass we do today. When was the last time Texas was good? When Jamie Carey was running the point. Thinking you can rely on a freshman point guard to get you through the rigors of the Big 12 is also ridiculous. And basically Cassie Peoples will be a freshman next year due to her limited playing time. In my estimation, Gail needs to get out to the junior college ranks and find herself a point guard that can lead the team and be an example for Cassie and Empress. If she doesn't have a schollie available find one....you've got two people on your bench you've chosen to sit for weeks on end while you're short-handed. Make room. If she doesn't do this next year is going to be Groundhog Day Part 5.

Re: Male Coach for UT women's basketball team

I think a male coach should be considered three days after there are women coaching men's college basketball teams in a number proportionate to the population of women in this state.
