Playstation 3 Help

My Playstation 3 is not reading any discs (including Blu Ray and games). Has anyone experienced this? What should I do?

I watched a Blu Ray movie on it last weekend, and it was working fine. I went to playstation.com, and it basically said that it probably needed service. Unfortunately, I have had the system for more than a year (like 14 months) so it is no longer under warranty. I am hoping that someone here may have a better solution.

No, this happened to me about a week ago. Your laser went out. You put any disk in, and the little disk icon in the upper right hand corner spins but nothing ever loads, right?

There are 3 options. 1) Send it to Sony for repair for a flat $150 2) Do a search on craigslist for someone local to do the replacement for you, try searching "ps3 repair" 3) Look up the tutorial on YouTube on how to replace the lens. It doesn't look that hard, honestly. I went the craigslist route and the guy did it for $80 here in Dallas.

The newer units use a different laser than my old school 20 GB. So be careful and make sure you buy the right laser diode if you decide to do it yourself.

If you decide to send it in to Sony, you fill out a long form, wait for them to send you a box, send it off (luckily the repair center is in El Paso so it shouldn't take to long), and reports are they will either repair yours or send you an identical refurb.

Whatever route you take, do a system backup to an external usb drive or hard disk before you attempt anything.

What you described is exactly what is happening. Thanks for the advise, I appreciate it. I will look into those three options.
