I read this story online this morning. I didnt see a pic, but he ws posing as a 16 year old. He enrolled as an 8th grader in Jr High in 2009. Sounds like he duped the whole school.
I believe it was Rollie Sheldon who pulled a similar stunt on the New York Yankees back in the 1960s (or maybe it was the late 50s). He was this 19-year-old phenom, but in reality, he really was 26 or 27 and had served three years in the Air Force.
Then Jim Bouton did it once he left baseball and was working as a sports reporter in New York. He went to the Yanks' open tryouts in wig, facial hair and sunglasses, posing as a 21-year-old phenom. He amazed the Yankees with his control over several pitches, including a knuckleball. He would have gotten away with it, too, except that when they asked him what year he was born, the year he gave indicated that he was 12.
That's what I love about...nevermind.
This guy really fooled the administration, which included former UT coach Leon Fuller. I don't know how they would have suspected the truth, until someone recognized the guy. He was just a good con man. Hopefully, he just did it because he loved basketball and wanted to keep playing, and didn't commit any other crimes, because he may be going to the iron bar hotel for a lengthy stay.
I coached against him at an AAU tournament about a month ago. I honestly didn't think he looked that old, but he definitely looked like a man. I told my kids to be ready to double-team him because we're not that strong inside, but we never needed to, because honestly he wasn't that good.
He scored about 8 points on us, and we beat his team by around 12-15. He got a technical at one point in the 2nd half, and then fouled out late in the game. When his coach told me he went to Permian, all I could think about was seeing him on the football field.
He was not that good, but at Permian you really don't have to be too good. Their coach never coached any where but the Boys Club. At Permian they ask the football coaches who wants to coach basketball this year. A lot of good basketball players have come through that school and amounted to nothing.
