....and really enjoyed it.
I've played this course about 10 times total, starting back when it first opened.
Lots of big elevation changes, many sidehill lies and some blind shots.
Playing it multiple times and acquiring local knowledge is very valuable.
When it first opened (and then for decades thereafter) this course was beyond challenging and often unfair, IMHO.
Sloping fairways would allow good drives to roll off into the woods and the dense, woodsy and grassy rough ate up a lot of balls.
It was hard to appreciate (or even figure out) many good things about the concept or design of the course.
It's much better now.
A lot of the woodsy rough has been cleared and berms on the downhill borders of some of the fairways help to keep balls in play.
I, at age 71, played it with my 40 year old son and we played a two man best ball scramble.
We both played from the blue tees.
We were 5 under par as a team using this format.
I never lost a ball, although my long knocking partner lost a few when going for distance after my ball was in play.
It was fun and challenging and we had a great time.
The course is difficult (and even more so if you don't know the layout or go for long shots all the time) but at last I could see whatever "genius" was in the planning and we took some advantage of what shotmaking abilities we had as a team.
Kudos to the City of Leander for finally improving this very, very, very, very hilly Hill Country course to more fully realize its concept, layout and potential.
Recommended for those who have the patience to play target golf and/or a companion available so as to team up and play a best ball.
Grip it and rip it type singles will have much, much, much more difficulty.
And anyone walking their entire round is in for a very strenuous day of exercise.
I usually score 75-80 at Delaware Springs MGC in Burnet from the white tees and other than my aged legs being very tired and sore from walking up and down the steep slopes to many of the tee boxes and greens, I had a great time and my shorter shots were used as often as were my partner's.
The grass and maintenance were great, the creeks were running, cold drinking water and restrooms were plentiful and the many, many homes were built far enough away so as not to intrude onto the course.
$42.50 apiece at 2:00 on a Saturday including half a cart.
We'll be going back.
