Playa del Carmen Restaurants

The wife and I are going to Maroma next week and plan on going into Playa for dinner and need a good recommendation? We are looking for some local Mayan or Mexican cuisine. The only restaurant that I remember being recommended here is Yaxache but I see that the Trip Advisor reviews indicate its a little hit or miss.

Don't really have any recommendations other than to say one of the greatest meals my wife and I ever had was at a cafe in Playa. It was a hut, no walls, big screen tvs with soccer, margaritas, dogs running in and out of the tables. I hope you and your wife have fun.

BTW, funny side note. We were told over and over on the cruise to avoid the local water. We took water bottles and were very careful as to what we had to drink. At the end of aforementioned meal, I turn to my wife and friends and say, "so, where do y'all think they get the ice for the margaritas we just drank?"

I survived but a couple of people had some stomach issues. Just didn't think about the ice in the margaritas...

Are you wanting something nice and romantic or best local mexican food you've ever had? They are actually mutually exclusive.

My favorite restaurant in playa is Cocina 38, hands down. Very nice, intimate with awesome food and owners.

For some kickass mexican steak (like fajitas but just plain awesome), go to Super Carne.

If you want Mayan, then Yaxche is the Choice. The only way it is "hit or miss" is if you miss it all together. I wouldn't leave Maroma more than one night if I was you. Heck, if it isn't on the menu at Maroma, they'll make it for you. I agree with ScottSins too, Cocina 38 is pretty good....small portions, but good. Can't go wrong with John Grey's Place either. And believe it or not, the food is pretty dang good at Cueva Del Chango. it can be a little hot back there because you are in the trees, but food is good, and a vast assortment of unique varieties of margs.

The food at the cave is nothing to write home about, but th atmosphere is cool...

Have drinks in the Cave. Don't spend $ on food from there.
