Plasma TV is dead; Pioneer exits

I think this indicates two things- 1) don't keep getting your *** kicked by a bigger badder bully 2) LCD's that are "plasma-like" in dimension are a step closer

I think it just shows a mass exodus from the "affordable" HDTV market. Rear projection and plasma are going the way of the dodos, not because the technology is bad or flawed, but because the big guys just can't make enough money on those product lines.

This article is not accurate. It is correct to say that Pioneer will not be producing a 42" unit any longer. Not this year but the following year, as it stands right now, Pioneer will let Panasonic oversee the production of the actual glass for their plasma displays. They allow Panasonic to also have the information they have on their current Plasma technology. Pioneer is also doing a joint venture with Sharp into LCD TVs.
In the past week Pioneer said that they are even re-thinking of the deal with Panasonic and going to try to still do their panels themselves. The Link

To reecho hlaustin's comments, this article is misleading and the title is wrong.

They're not stopping plasma TV production, they're just outsourcing the plasma panel (the glass/plasma layer) to Panasonic. The panel is still an important part, but Panasonic is a good brand as well.

For what's its worth, Pioneer's plasmas are probably the best televisions available right now with Panasonic a close second.

My Pioneer PDP 50" shows sports better than any LCD's I've watched sports on. If they keep making them, I'll keep buying Pioneers. It's by far the best HD sports picture I've seen.

It seems to me that Pioneer screwed the pooch by trying to focus on the high end of the market. It turns out that there's just not enough people willing to pay a significant premium to but the absolute highest picture quality. The consumer has spoken. Consumers prefer pretty damn good picture quality at low prices.

I've heard it's the response time as well but my sister and bil just got a brand new Sony LCD that shows the "chop" around the edges in fast paced sports. I don't see it w/ the plasma.

The SO and I just shopped around for a new one a couple of months ago, compared pictures side-by-side, and went with a plasma because the picture was better for the money we were spending at the time. LCDs in our price range had inferior pictures. The least expensive LCDs with comparable pictures were a couple Franklins short of 2x what we paid for the plasma.

haven't checked in 9mos or so, but then LCDs were inferior to the Pioneer plasmas on fast paced sports and dark colors.
