In the fall when I come to Austin for a football weekend. Me and some buds figure we'll take the Friday before and spend a day touring ice houses and BBQ joints in a menadering tour on the way to and from Shiner. Any suggestions of:
- BBQ joints to hit?
- Ice houses?
- just cool or wierd stuff to see/do along the way?

We're not in any hurry, so detours are not a hinderance.

You definitely want to hit Lockhart for lunch. You can pick any one of 4 great bbq joints, or you can pick more than one and compare. Good stuff.

Not sure where you are coming from but if its Houston you should try going 90-A. An old girlfriend and I went up to a game one weekend via 90-A. Took S. Main out of Houston. You go thru a bunch of towns; Sugarland, Richmond/Rosenburg, Eagle Lake, Shiner, Yoakum, Gonzales (to name a few), and finally catch I-10 at Seguin. Had a blast. Tons of ice-houses and beer/bbq joints along the way. Took us about 10 hours. Pretty spent by the time we finally got to Austin but definitely worth it.

We're starting in Austin and ending there. The only other part of the trip that is certain is the Shiner stop.

Be aware, the last tour goes in at 1:30, and the Hospitality Room closes around 2:30.
We used to shut that place down on Fridays.
They would kick us out at 4:30, then we'd hit the bar in Moulton.
Good times.

Samanai,

Allow me as I have made this trip you are planning many times with my dad, brother in law, and uncle. I live in Pensacola Beach, and when I come to visit San Antone we plan this road trip.

1. Take the 11a tour. (maybe 11:30a so check.)
2. Tasting room for four free beers.
3. Hit Maeker's country store to buy regular and dried sausage. Load regular sausage in cooler and take dried sausage back into the store and sit at the bar and drink Shiner Bock and eat said sausage.
4. Go to Patek's and buy more sausage. Both Patek's and Maeker's are good. Patek's has more variety. Also buy Shiner beer for the ride to Lockhart.
5. Proceed to Lockhart and eat at Kruez Market.
6. At this point we usually head back to San Antone via San Marcos and stop at the New Braunfels Smokehouse to get turkey jerky for the women at home.

Enjoy your trip.
