Planning a camping trip

I'm in the process of planning a camping trip and would like some help finding a good place to go. I'm looking for a park between Austin and Dallas, somewhere around Waco or Temple. I've ruled out the state parks because they don't allow alcohol. (I'll take my chances if I have to, but I'd rather find an alternative.)

I know there are several Army Corps of Engineers parks on Lake Waco and Belton Lake, but I can't find much information online. I'd like to find a place that lends itself to tent camping and where the campgrounds are fairly isolated from one another. (I plan to get quietly f'ed up and pour myself into bed.) I'll be with a group of about 8-12 and we aren't interested in boating.

Any suggestions?

The corps of engineers park is right next to just South of Lake Belton's dam. The views are beautiful, and there is a big preserve to walk around and down right across the road. I would guess you have to make some sort of reservation. There is also some other parks for camping on Lake Belton. You might try the Belton Chamber or try calling Morgan's Point Resort which is a small incorporated city that would probably be helpful.

Belton is probably the prettiest lake left in Texas. Travis is still probably the most beautiful if you go in the heart of winter without a thousand boats dotting the Horizon.

The secret to all public drinking is the Rede SoHo cup... P.S. did you know that it illegal to consume alcohol in public prior to noon on Sunday? Fun facts I learned in high school.

Are ya'll loud drunks? That could be a factor. I like Bastrop state park alot. But, I think it all comes down to using enough camp spots, and using plastic cups, if it is a state park. Reserve a bunch of camping spots together, and use cups is my advise. I go camping quite a bit and drink a lot, and I think as long as you are not LOUD after 10 or whatever and don't flaunt your alcohol around, then the Rangers won't funk with you.

Here is the link you need for the park info for belton The Link Oak Ridge is the park that the prettiest IMO. Site have electricy and water.

Other stuff that's good nearby- In the town of Belton on Central Avenue is a BBQ place called Schoepf's- It the cousin of the legendary Coopers in Llano and is darn good. right up the road from the campsite is a good morning breakfast joint called Kevin's that might come in handy with your hangover. There is also just up the road another Corps park called Temple Lake park that is more swimming friendly if you want to take a dip... again to help with the hangover...

have fun it reall is pretty up there, as my folks have a place on the lake. Pm me if you need more info.

You really shouldn't worry about the no public drinking rule in state parks. We camp at least once a month in a state park and drink all the time. All you need to do is wrap it up in a coozie or pour it into a cup. It's one of these rules that's there but rarely enforced. It's there to give the Park Rangers leverage to deal with obnoxious, rude campers. So, as long as your not a loud, rude drunk, you should be fine.

Horn the drinking before noon on sunday was changed to 10 because of the resturants gripping they couldnt get business for sunday games befiore they started and noone wanted to just show up as the game was starting hehe
