I'm leaving for Italy next week and was wondering what the good restaurants are to eat at in Rome, Florence, and Venice.

Since I know alot of people on this board have been over to italy before, what places would you recommend?

i dont remember any of the names of the places that i ate at when over there, but i never had a bad meal.

try the pizza.

For a traditional Florentine meal, Sostanza is a must. They have the best (and most moderately priced) bistecca that I have ever eaten.

Here are some of my suggestions in Rome:
The Link

Also, don't eat in the San Marco district of Venice. Go to Dorsoduro, Santa Croce or even Castello.

When you go to Venice check out the islands of Murano(glass) and Burano(lace). Burano was my favorite. If it is cool outside you must go to St. Marks square and order a cup of hot chocolate at the outdoor cafe.

Go across the Ponte Vecchia away from the tourist places. You will wind through a little neighborhood and off a street to your left is the best restaurant that I have ever been to. I can't remember the name unfortunately. I asked some Florentine at the flea market what was the best place to eat for locals. As me and my wife were wandering through the neighborhood, I stopped and asked an older man if he knew where the restaurant was located. He looked stunned and said in perfect English, "How do you know about that place?" When I told him that a lady with a booth in the flea market recommended it, he said that it was outstanding. He explained that he was a professor living in Florence and that no tourists knew about that restaurant and the people in that area wanted to keep it that way. I told him that I understood and would keep a low profile. Me and my wife went in, sat at a long table with a bunch of locals and had without a doubt the best pasta that I will ever eat. Good luck finding it. It has no signs and can't be seen from the street.

go get a copy of the Thirty Traveler book on italy. they do a good job of weeding out the americanized touristy places, which are ALL OVER in Rome.

In Roma:

Bruni
A Tuscan restaurant in Roma. The best steak in town. Zero tourists. Please go here, it will make me happy.

Address: Viale Germanico, 58/60. Tell a taxi, they have GPS.

il peperoncino dispettoso.
Superb Pizza Napoletana, but perhaps not very convenient.
Medaglie d'Oro 158

Although touristy, Piazza Navona is an amazing place to have an evening meal. We didn't eat at either, but they come highly recommended. Particularly the first. Or, just pick a front row spot at one of the dozen restaurants that ring the piazza. Surreal.

Il Cantuccio
Corso Rinascimento, 71

I Due Ladroni

Remember, Italiani eat late. Have a great time.

In Florence, no question - go to La Giostra. make a reservation or you will never get in. This is one of my favorite 3 restaurants in all of Europe.

In Venice, there's a great restaurant in San Marco called Le Centrale. It's modern on the inside and the food is fantastic. Its the only place we ate in San Marco, we went to the other areas for the rest of our evenings.

Both restaurants have websites and you'll definitely need to reserve as soon as possible.
