Going to NYC and staying near Times Square. Need restaurant recomendations. Thanks

Cue the "they're all tourist traps!" mantra........

I'm a big fan of Angus McIndoe on W45th, right next to the Nederlander Theatre. A few short blocks from TS.

It's a small, casual, continental place, pretty much the opposite of the Big Box Chains that are in actual Times Square.

WHen I was there I asked for a recommendation in the "Times Square Info Center". They told me a street, (maybe 42nd?) that is just off Broadway. It had tons of restraunts with may different kinds of food. Ask in the Info Center if you dont come up with anything else.

Unfortunately I worked in Times Square in the Bertelsmann Building for 4 years. Let me get the requisite Times Square sucks out of the way.

After that it depends what you want. There's good pub food at O'Lunney's on 45th. On 46th, there's a decent Cuban place called Havana Central and an awesome Cuban lunch counter called Margon. Bond 42 on 45 is decent but pricey. There's also a decent, by NYC standards, Mexican place on 44. Don't touch any Chinese place in the area. Other than that you've got a bunch of chain restaurants.

So like everyone else I'm going to tell you to get out of Times Square. Go to 9th Ave, Hells Kitchen. Only a couple of blocks and much better choices. All affordable, and nearly all are good. What type of food are you looking for and what's your price range?

There is a great diner, Starstruck, 47th St. @ 8th Ave, just a couple blocks away. Open 24 hours. Check to see if Christine's working there. She is a hoot. Tell her I still love her.

For dinner, we enjoyed The District, Times Square, 130 W. 46th St., 212-485-2999 - Pre-theater. Very cool place.

We also liked Foley's Fish House, 714 7th Ave, (212) 261-5200. In the pointy building, looks down on Times Square.

There is an Italian Restaurant on 49th called Baldoria I've eaten at a couple of times and really like.

it's been a couple years, but i lived close to times square until 06. if you go down 46th, between 8th and 9th you'll find a ton of places. there's a thai place at 52nd and 8th that's the best thai food i've ever had. tons of italian places all around that area. might try checking out zagat.com. what hotel are you staying at?
