The Indian Navy is shadowing a bulk carrier likely taken by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea

Pirates of the Arabian Sea have taken over a Bulgarian managed bulk carrier ship--the Maltese-flagged MV Ruen. There are/were 18 crew members on board. The Indian Navy was relatively near and is now on the scene.

A bulk carrier or bulker is a merchant ship specially designed to transport unpackaged bulk cargo—such as grain, coal, ore, steel coils, and cement—in its cargo holds.

Per “What’s Going on With Shipping”, we are moving some more surface ships (destroyers in particular) to the area. They think we will reject doing a convoy system for now, so Maersk, Lloyd, etc (and their cargo owners) may be soon paying MUCH higher insurance rates.

Spain is nearby with a warship and is sailing at flank speed to assist the Indians. We’re still pretty far away (at least with any surface ships).

seems like well positioned Navies would stop this
There's a lot of ocean, and only so many warships...

This is India's backyard, and they have begun taking a leading role in patrolling the Indian Ocean and surrounding seas. We have ships in the Indian Ocean and the Persian/Arabian Gulf area, but we're generally a whole lot heavier in the Med.

Of course, but aren't the shipping lanes defined? Those are what need protecting not the entire ocean.

It is the whole ocean except as one gets closer to a coast, the owner of that coast starts paying attention. At some point, enforcing "shipping lanes" as traffic management measures takes over.

To your point we, USA, put together a 10 nation consortium to patrol and better protect civilian ships in the Red Sea where the pirating is taking place.
See my post #7

6721, that will not do any good unless the consortium takes offensive action against those launching the drones and firing rockets.

Good point. I reread my link and don't see any notice of what specific action this group will take.
We do know the US France and Britain have shot down dozens of drones and missiles launched by Houthis

There have been convoys run in the past in a few instances, but that's not normal. There are only so many warships and a whole lot of ocean to cover and patrol, even if just considering the shipping lanes.

Now, if we wanted to shut down the World's major shipping lanes, say to China, or to/from the Persian/Arabian Gulf, we could do that in a few hours.

It's easier to blow stuff up and tear stuff down, than it is to build and create stuff.

Thomas Jefferson knew how to deal with this kind of crap, but we don't.
I suppose we could blast the Houthis (whoever they are) back to the Stone Age. I don't know if our top leadership considers it a big enough deal for that yet...?

Then again, Maersk and the other big shippers may want to hire their own escort ships. They've been freeloading off of us for all these decades...

Something like a well armed PT boat, some scout drones, and a few manned deck guns on the escorted vessels would probably do the trick.

And Egypt needs to pony up some $$$.

They're the ones who massively benefit from shipping tolls on the Suez canal.

Basically, if the USN said "screw you guys, you're on your own", the nations of the World would come to value the United States a lot more. The world's shipping lanes have been kept free and open to all---for the first, and only, time in human history---for the last 8 decades or so by the USN. The international economy has depended on it.

Jeffersons's Marine knew what to do in Tripoli and Montezuma.
Semper Fi Marines
Not knowing what they would find of the crew of the USS Philadephia shows Marine courage

USN helicopters sunk 3 Houthi pirate boats yesterday. The pirates were trying to get to and board a tanker. No pirates from the sunken boats survived.

Hope this becomes a good deterrent to other potential pirates. "Take no prisoners" might be the right approach for these idoits.

Until the US bombs every pirate camp, nothing is going to change. Does anyone actually think Iran would raise a finger to support those guys knowing their first move would be their last move.
