Nice 20/20 hindsight. The cops must have been without their crystal ball that night.

First of all, it was a prowler call. They didn't know who or what they had until the prowler(s) was (were) apprehended and the story was pieced together. Second, I'd bet the chopper was already in the air on patrol. They generally don't wait for a call to launch, much less for something as low priority as a prowler call.

When I was a security screener at DFW in 1977 (one of my summer jobs while in college) it was not at all uncommon for a pilot and a stew to rip off piece in an unused jetway.
