I was saddened to hear(In Oklahoma word travels slow) that Pierre Celis, the sole custodian and shepard of the Belgian Wit Beer style through the decades of the 60's and 70's in Europe was laid to rest in Hoegaarden two Saturdays ago. With the help of his daughter he started an ambitious Belgian style brewery in East Austin in the early 1990's bucking the trend of hop forward, west coast style micro brews that dominated the new and blossoming craft beer culture at the time.
I was always into craft beer, but it wasn't until I had my first celis white that I really thought of what amazing frontiers there must be in the world of beer and that at the age of 24 I may have only cracked the surface............. fruit, spices, wheat, bret, candy sugar........ my world was rocked.
There has been much debate in the beer nerd blogesphere on how much influence the Celis brewerey had on the much later explosion in the popularity of Belgian styles. All I know is that those beers are what inspired me to make my own beer even though I had been drinking Fullers, guiness, and sierra Nevada for a while.
