Buenos Aires was filled with smoke a few weeks ago after wind shifts brough smoke from intentionally burning of underbrush north of the city about 50+ miles. The new report is that this stuff is coming our way in a few days. Yeah.

Fascinating how the eruption creates all of that lightning. I assume that is caused by all of the static electricity.

Drag, I was wondering the same thing. I'm sure we have at least 10 or 12 guys who claim to be vulcanologists.

Electrically I think of it as a large spray atomizer, with the particulates and gases becoming ionized as they are ejected through the "nozzle." Cumulatively the charges in a cloud can become quite large, producing the Megavolt potentials required to produce lightning like that.

I'll add that there is a potential gradient in the atmosphere, and the clouds themselves are at a high potential as well.
