Pickens wants B. Self

Nice way to create a distraction before the biggest game of Bill Self's life. I don't know if Self had any inkling of jumping to his alma mater after the tournament, but you would think Pickens learned something from Michigan about how to botch a coaching search by making offers and/or leaking reports for your top candidate at the wrong time.

It's one thing to leave the KU bb job for your alma mater, if that school is UNC. It's quite another thing to leave KU for Okie State.

Now if ol T Boone throws say $5mil/year at Self, who knows.

I'd be shocked if Self had already taken the offer. I also doubt Pickens leaked this information.

That said, I wouldn't be shocked if he took it after Monday's game. That's a ton of money to go home. One thing fans can't look at objectively is the value of home. And it's not like OSU has a terrible basketball history; they've been to 6 final fours and have 2 national championships. They also have a nice loud stadium.

KU sells out every game and will throw around a ton of money to fight this. Should be fun to watch.

A $6mm signing bonus plus $3 - 4 mm per year is insane, but TBP doesn't care. I think he's finally realized that there's a better chance of Okie State winning a nat'l championship in b'ball than football & since even his money ain't gonna keep him from taking a dirt nap forever he's moving his target. For now.

Either Self wants to go back to Stillwater or he doesn't. I think it would be dangerous for OSU in the long run if they were forced to overpay for Self. The honeymoon will be shorter, & although they might claim Okie State has lower expectations than Kansas anytime you hire someone to by far the most lucrative contract in their field you can count on their being some very lofty goals within a very short time frame.

Basketball coaching salaries are still way below football salaries. I think Billy Donovan might be over $3 million but that could be it. There are lots of football coaches over $2.5/$3.0 million.

Stillwater might be a suckhole but a $6 million signing bonus plus $3 to $4 million per year is way more than Kansas would even consider paying. That makes this story valid if true.

It's true that there is a rift between Holder and the Suttons, and has been for years, but I've never heard any more than speculation regarding Pickens' feelings towards them.

Here's the thing. Pickens has never really shown any interest in any sport other than football. He attends very few basketball games and has donated very little if any to the program. All his efforts and interest seems to be directed toward the football program.

It's true that he could come through with another donation to pay for a huge contract for Self or whoever else, but right now it's just speculation by people on the outside or fans. There's no sign that he seems even remotely interested in being involved in the basketball program at this point.

Could that change? As an OSU fan, I hope it does.

$$$ talks, but so do the KU faithful. You know Self if getting a fat *** check after he cuts down the nets tonight.

Also T Boon is an *** hole. Firing of Sutton proves it. Its like having to work for Jerry Jones, it is only good while you are winning and the second you piss off the man, you are gone and your rep trashed. Self will make Kansas his home till retirement.

The CBS announcers just said that if they can't get Self they will turn their attention to Billy Gillispie. Wouldn't that drive aggie crazy?

Gillespie's resume:
UTEP - 2 years
A&M - 3 years
Kentucky - 1 year

If he jumps to OSU, do T. Boone and Friends really believe he'd stick around?

Billy Clyde to OSU! Wow! That would be delicious. Can you imagine the crowd at Reed when Billy Clyde comes back to College Station!

I wonder if that would impact our recruiting any?

Poke, you are just about the most uninformed OSU fan out there. Football may be the most important sport to TBP but he cares about all of them. He is spending hundreds of millions to build everything from a women's soccer stadium to men's baseball. No sport is being overlooked.

For some of the other posts here. Gillispie is a candidate but he is down the list. Everything is on the table for Self and we will pay a huge premium for an alum who has said all along that he wants to be back in Stillwater. His wife is a former OSU cheerleader and their family is in Edmond. Make no mistake about it, Holder and Pickens want Self and if Self decides to stay at KU it will not be about money because there is more offered than KU will be able to come up with.

If for some reason Bill does decide to stay in Kansas it will be Dixon before Gillispie.

my okie state buddy sent me a text after the game last night saying Self to OSU is "a done deal". I personally think he's drinking the kool-aid but I can't think of the last time an open HC position @ okie state was this entertaining.

I think all Kansas has to do is give him a raise. His current contract is not in line with the other top basketball schools. They fix that and I don't think there will be a problem. Self said as much on Mike and Mike this morning. If Kansas loses him, they will only have themselves to blame.

Guys, learned from a family friend who is a retired d1 coach and now agent that coaches are $ whores. They chase the $ and this is a huge pile of $ if true. Even if KU ponied up and made him a $2MM a year guy or even $3MM a year guy he would be leaving $7MM on the table in year 1. (reported signing bonus + salary differential) It would be different if it was not his alma mater and family ties and has a big time donor with new big time athletic facilities.

One possible benefit - it would likely give the Big XII another impressive coach. Kansas will be able to get a top notch coach no matter what. I'm not sure OSU is going to be willing to shell out that kind of money for a non-alum.

Pickens' money hasn't brought them football success. They have better players, but that has as much to do with taking character and grade risks as improved facilities. They get the occasional victory over ou and have the impressive ability to blow any lead to us. Not a lot of bang for their buck.
