Photo Archive

Just about to get my first digital camera. Does anyone have recommendations about archiving the px? I don't really care about editing the photos, but I do want the ability to be able to query my inventory (e.g., show me all my pictures with my son and wife for 2005). If this can be accomplished with on online service - all the better. I have a laptop at home with only an additional 1GB of memory available, would prefer not to have buy an external drive.

You can do it online if you like, but if you plan to do much with your images, I'd store them at home and put the ones you want to share online. You can do the online thing at:The LinkThe LinkThe Link
and so on. The problem is you wont be able to search them very well, as far as I can tell, and it wont be nearly as fast as doing it locally.

For local storage and organization that you can call up later, you can use ACDSee or Adobe Photoshop CS (I think that Photoshop Elements does it too). If you google around online you'll find rankings of these types of programs, demos, and the like. But if you do it all locally, make sure to back up regularly to optical discs, or some storage outside of your computer. You'd hate to have a HD failure wipe out all your pics.

No ****. I have 3 hard drives and backed up my photos to another drive, but now some of my photos are corrupt on both hdd's and I can't get them to display. I have downloaded 5 recovery programs, with no success. I learned my lesson, and did a search for cheapest, best online storage, and I think image station is a good deal. I had some backed up to cd, but still cd's scratch, and don't last 10 years, so it is worth it to pay 10 bucks a year to hold all your photos.

I would also strongly suggest Picasa for keeping up with your photos on your computer. It is free from Google and is very easy to use, is not a resource hog and quickly displays your pictures, making them easy to find on your hard drive.
