Phony rape story

I'm surprised no one has posted on Rolling Stone's bogus rape story. I don't normally link to Fox News stories, but I think Howard Kurtz ran a decent article. Link

It's scary how this media outlet set aside pretty much all standards of fair and accurate reporting to drive this goofy "rape culture" narrative.

No big surprise here. I don't think I have ever read an article in Rolling Stone in my life, and my personal inclination is definitely not to go looking for factual, investigative reporting in an entertainment magazine. Why should we be surprised when it turns out these clowns like to tell dramatic stories more than they like to uphold rigorous journalistic standards?

The Rolling Stone has taken a credibility hit here. I think one worry is that we are treading on uneven ground here. At what point does behavior that's not very nice become a horrific felony?

There's definitely a difference between rape and bad sex. Colleges, Society -- and friends -- should discourage sexual encounters in a drunken girl and a drunken guy have consensual sex without particularly feeling connected to one another. It's ugly when the guy disrespects her during and afterwards ... but falls short of the horrific crime of forcible rape.

The jury said Rolling Stone published with actual malice. Or, with knowledge of false information or reckless disregard.
This is a very tough, almost impossible standard to prove.
Juries rarely reach it.
In fact, most cases are not even brought if the plaintiff is "in the public eye," even if the plaintiff was demonstrably defamed.

I hope the plaintiffs are able to hold this verdict on appeal. Appellate courts are brutal on these.
