Pho Kong Ly and Kim Phong

If you find yourself in Austin going Vietnanese noodle withdrawl (vermicelli) both of these places are pretty good. Pho Kong Ly is on 6th Street (more upscale) and Kim Phong is at Lamar and 183 (very inexpensive). Keep in mind that Chinese food and Vietnanese food can be and usually are different, but they do share some common dishes (like fried rice and sesame chicken etal....)

The best thing about Kim Phong is the game you can play with your friends while eating. Take a drink of your water and see how fast a waitress comes to refill your glass. I've never seen anything like it...they have girls walking around just refilling water glasses like madmen. Last time I was there, I couldn't get my glass down to 3/4 full without it getting filled to the brim. Pretty funny, but good service and good food and CHEAP!

I love Pho Cong-Ly on 6th. The food is super tasty, good sized portions and damn if the ambience is not great. I love what they did with that space. The upstairs eating area is nice too. (Note: there are a couple of other Cong-Ly's in town...they are franchises of a larger company and not affiliated with the 6th street location...related to owner but not owned by.) 6th street locations rocks.

pho has been busted about 3 times in the past year for health violations. rat droppings and the like. just keep that in mind.

Scally: which restaurant and location? I have seen a couple of places mentioned but neither were the two mentioned on the thread. I have seen alot of restaurants busted. I hate it when I see one I really like. I guess I don't hate it enough 'cause I still go back.

Huh. I will have to check into that. I am good friends with the owner so I can get the straight dope. I used to run a couple of Restaurant's. At any given time, even the very best can get busted. It all depends on when the inspector's come in and the mindset/lazyness of your hired help...however, there are some scummy places. I wish I could see the kitchen of everywhere I eat, or maybe I don't.

Thanks for the info.

Kim Phong has definitely gone downhill.

However Pho Huang on Rutland is excellent, in my opinion.
