PG position

It is often asserted and I agree that the PG position is the most important position in winning championships.

Here is a review of the last five championship pgs.

KU-Russell Robinson, Sherron Collins, Mario Chalmers
FL-Taurean Green (x2)
UNC-Raymond Felton
UConn-Taliek Brown
Syracuse-Gerry McNamara

Felton won the cousey award, but the rest of these guys were not transcendant stars. (Mac was a freshman during syracuse's championship season). These guys ran the offense, played defense and made few mistakes.

In trying to figure out Texas' chances of a national championship in the next 5 years, the pg duties shake out like this...

2008-09 - Mason and Balbay
2009-10 - Mason, Balbay and Lucas
2010-11 - Balbay and Lucas
2011-2012 - Lucas and Kabongo
2012-2013 - Kabongo

Mason needs to initiate the offense better and Balbay needs to play less mechanical and neither will be comfortable outside shooters, but the capability is there to make a run for a national championship next year. Lucas has to be the change of pace guy when he comes in. I don't want to see AJ Abram like minutes from him. Next year's team won't need that production.

And with the probable addition of Kabongo, Texas has the potential to make a four year run at the championship (2010-2013).

Rivals has a teaser on Kabongo possibly coming to UT.

Here is an ESPN Evaluation

December, 2008: This super quick lead guard continues to impress. He pushes the ball in transition with tremendous speed and quickness. He is a terrific ball handler and passer that can beat his man with crossover, between the legs and hesitation moves. Kabongo also has a quick first step and burst on speed that allows him to get to the rim before the help side defenders can react. Kabongo finishes inside with high arcing layups over outstretched hands. Kabongo displayed good leadership skills and the ability to run the offense. Kabongo also sets the tone on the defensive end with tremendous ball pressure. He has quick hands and feet and does a great job of maintaining the offensive player%u2019s attention at all times. Kabongo must improve his three shooting. He is streaky but must work for consistence to set up his penetration. At times he over penetrates which results in a turnover. He competes at all times as well. Kabongo will need to get stronger but is clearly a high major point guard.
