Peter King: Austin Wood is my hero

South Austin

In his Monday Morning QB column for SI.com, Peter King (one of my favorite sports writers) writes about Austin Wood. Good stuff. He starts the column with the quote below, then has a good write-up in his "Stat of the Week/Hero of the Week" section.

It's awesome when you read the story progression like that. Something out of a movie. The only thing that would have made it cooler is if we somehow pulled off the win while Austin was on the mound around the 20th inning.

Great read, great performance.

nice piece.. too bad it was buried on page 3 of his column.

Should have been front and center.

I was at the game it was a hell of a performance. One of the best for sure. Nothing was better than Vince Young's performance in the 2006 Rose Bowl though. Nothing!

Sorry, Hi. But I'll give you this: In terms of significance to the school, VY's performance will never be beat. But Austin's effort last Saturday was transcendent. Throwing 12 innings of no-hit ball would be like a quarterback throwing for 800 yards and never missing a pass.

You mean it would be like VY throwing for 267 yards and rushing for 200 yards snapping USC's 34 game win streak and beating one of the greatest college football teams of all time in one of the most thrilling finishes of all time. I would say VY's performance was "transcendent" to say the least.

Wrong implication on my part. Sorry. Of COURSE Vince was transcendent. Yes, it was one of the greatest performances by a college QB ever, in one of the greatest games the sport has offered. All I'm saying is, Austin Wood's pitching tested the bounds of human achievement. Or to say it another way, if you asked a baseball guy prior to Saturday whether any pitcher would ever throw a 12+ inning no-no out of the bullpen, the most likely answer would be, "No. That is not humanly possible." And yet it happened.

What cochamps said. No reason to compare them. Don't we have a new university president?

Vince's RB game was the University's greatest athletic achievement, in terms of the stakes involved, national interest & quality of the game itself.

Wood's game was the greatest athletic performance
, and probably one of the five greatest in any NCAA sport, period.
