Personal Web Site Help

I'm looking to set up a personal web site for my family as my wife is due with our first kid. I don't know anything about web publishing but am fairly competent on the computer.

Is there a book or website that covers the basics?

We run my wife's business website (www.kristyscookies.com for anyone interested) off our home computer through our router and will either run this the same way or use Roadrunner''s space that comes with their highspeed service (5mb is probably not going to be enough).

I really just need a starting point.

I learned HTML through various sources, but primarily through this site. I never looked at a book, except when I went over PHP, but I probably would recommend the cheapest HTML book you can find in a book store. HTML is a fairly easy thing to learn. You just have to learn the basics and then everything else is bounded by your creativity or the ability to modify other people's code.

For a webhost, I run mine off www.ripplehost.com. It's a cheap service ($10/per year) that provides 200 mb of space and 4 gb of bandwidth per year, but it's decent.
