Perry just called 2nd special session

Humiliation by a very small minority in this state......

Abortion if it was put to a vote in this state would lose by at least a 70-30 margin, if not a higher number.

I would hate to see what would happen if we let that ******** ever happen again......

There were members of the House enticing the crown and encouraging and telling them what to do, the vote was complete by the deadline, the parlimentary procedures occured after midnight......

Let whatever her name is run for statewide office in Texas, she will get pummelled as bad as most democrats do in statewide elections.

Good. I hope they jam the abortion bill right down Wendy Davis' throat.

The way the national left wing media has seized on her as a becon of light in the right wing darkness that is Texas makes me puke. She fumbled her filibuster attempt. She f'd up 3 times, ending the filibuster. It was only the rowdy Sandra Fluke crowd that filled the gallery that prevented the bill from passing.

Hard to see how Wendy Davis messed up. She went from someone nobody ever heard of to national political force in one fell swoop. A person for Democrats to rally around has been created.

I'm fine with the second special session and the bill passing. Although I believe the supreme court will find the 20 week limit unconstitutional. Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't the SCOTUS defended a 24 week limit?

For somebody that has given up on the political process, watching the **** show in the senate was pretty amusing. I don't think Davis was off topic when discussing access to abortions and the use of sonograms, which was her third strike. I thought that the filibuster should have been allowed to continue.

a special session is needed because they have not addressed the major problems facing our state. Roads, education, healthcare. our current roads are vastly underfunded. we are still waiting for the courts to tell us how much more we need spend per student. and we are potentially going to throw away a large sum of federal dollars by not expanding medicaid if Perry doesn't compromise. this is money that we have already paid in federal taxes that will go to other states if we do not act. but likely Perry will not adequately lead our legislature and we will continue to be a low rent state that ranks dead last or close to it in education and healthcare. but if hets the abortion bill passed and the budget he wants then he will declare success, send everyone home, and start his presidential campaign. not a good outlook for our state. we have the opportunity now to fix all of this but we do not have the political leadership needed.

I realize that it is very likely the abortion bill will pass in the 2nd special session.

I have serious reservations about whether it will survive the obvious lawsuit(s) that will follow. It seems to me that it won't...but who knows?

If it doesn't, the state of Texas will end up wasting a lot of time, effort and money for nothing. If it does survive, we will have illegal abortion clinics and back alley self administered abortions. And I say that as a somewhat pro life person. It is just the facts.

The Special Session is nothing more than pandering to a particular voting bloc. SB5 and anything similar in the second Session does nothing to protect females. This was never about protecting women. Dewhurst made that abundantly clear earlier in the year as has Perry with his various campaign stops.

If this were truly about protecting women then there would be exceptions for rape/incest/health of the mother. Instead it was drafted with no exceptions and in a manner that basically did nothing but restrict access to medical practitioners that could safely perform a procedure.

I find it rather telling that the ones typically screaming the loudest about how it is necessary to protect the health of women tend to be (predominantly) old white male politicians that are not going to be the ones adversely effected by the restrictions. Conservative politics have no business meddling in things affecting MY vagina!

Logic time: seems to me that no abortion affects your vagina a lot less than having an abortion. Secondly, what about your mouth and lungs? You can smoke but there are laws protecting the health of those affected by your "choice". This law would protect an innocent life (after 5 months) from your "choice" to harm it. Third, can you really not decide whether you want to be pregnant or not in the first five months? Do you need all nine? Lastly, the term "women's health" is a red herring. Call it what it is. This law would actually IMPROVE women's health but that's not what the argument is about is it?

Both sides use the red herring of women's health. Its more pleasant than discussing the details of what actually happens during an abortion.

To a certain extent, I believe in legal abortion. But at some point it becomes a lot less about your vagina and a lot more about another living being. Im not sure exactly where I would draw the line if I were king, but its hard for me to imagine needing more than 3 months to get an abortion.

Being lesbian, I am not likely to be in the position of having to make such a decision...but I am also a prior survivor of sexual assault. I am also susceptible to potential health issues that could arise due to age and family history that might not be apparent earlier in the pregnancy. SB5 made no exceptions even in those instances where someone was at risk.

There are also a number of instances where SOME women did not even show signs of pregnancy until well beyond the first trimester (and no, with the advent of the pills to limit periods to basically one every four months, one cannot presume the absence of the quarterly period to necessarily be indicia of pregnancy).

Dewhurst made it clear, as has Perry, that the goal is to ban abortion in Texas....period. And that means men trying to dictate and remove the reproductive rights and choice from females. As a female, I take offense to that.

Just for the record, I support the availability of abortions for health of the mother reasons in addition to all abortions in the first three months. After that, it becomes less about the woman and more about the baby. And yes, I could see how the "I didnt even know I was pregnant" crowd would get screwed by my views. Their lack of knowledge doesn't impact the development of the baby though.

The poll below it regarding Perry's 20 week position is strongly supported. As far as overall few of abortion, it is basically 50-50 considering 5% had no idea...

Again, most reasonable people don't have major problems with the 20 week rule. Maybe 18 is better...maybe 22 is better...who knows.

However, the fact that the bill will close most of the legal abortion clinics in Texas is insane, cruel, and hopefully, illegal. Total ********.

Cruel? I am no scholar on this bill, but doesn't it require increased safety and quality measures? While probably intentional, I do not think medical procedures should be performed in clinics to begin with.

Why is the assumption she will resort to a coat hanger? Does Nowhere, Texas not have any form of transportation?

Maybe we should expect personal responsibility for her and the father 's actions. I have a niece who was born to a 16 year old mother. She is now a doctor with three kids of her own. Sure glad she got a chance at life...

Have you guys seen this?

Apparently, the mob in the Senate gallery was driven significantly by local chapters of the Occupy movement and the International Socialist Organization. In other words, they brought in a cavalcade of wingnuts to disrupt Senate proceedings.

Also, I could be wrong, but my understanding of the Occupy movement was that its focus was economic. Obviously, socialism is primarily a matter of economics. Though I'm sure it's fairly unusual, but couldn't someone be a pro-life "Occupier" or even a pro-life socialist? I don't really see why not.
