People who don't use the Lamar Pedestrian Bridge

Make me so freakin' mad. Why do some people insist on endangering their lives by using the one foot of sidewalk to cross the non-pedestrian bridge? The sidewalk on that bridge is clearly marked "Emergency Use Only" and the pedestrian bridge is mere feet away!

If a biker or walker happened to fall off the foot-wide sidewalk into traffic and get hit, would the person driving the car get in trouble or would the pedestrian be at fault for disregarding the posted signs?

I'm pretty sure(assuming no drug/alcohol use by the driver) the fault would be on the pedestrian. Unfortunately, it wouldn't make the driver feel any better, for the rest of his life, having killed/mamed someone. When people only think of themselves, others will likely suffer.

maybe its just me but i wouldnt loose much sleep over hitting some idiot pedestrian or bicyclist on that or any other road if they are idiots. major roads are NO place for cyclists or peds. but that might be another thread

Well, if it's a cycler, if you are riding south on lamar, and need to cross the river, it is a pain the *** to get from lamar and 6th, over to the ped bridge. Now whether a cyclist should even be riding on Lamar, is another debate. I find Congress to be safer.

Wasn't the whole reason the pedestrian bridge was built a result of some dumbass on a bike getting splattered all over Lamar when he tried to ride across on that little narrow sidewalk and he slipped off into the traffic? Maybe to dodge a pedestrian coming the other way, or someone he overtook?

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but it was something like that.

APD should station someone at each end of the Lamar bridge one weekend and hand out a ticket to every fool that uses the narrow sidewalk instead of the bridge...

"Dumbass on a bike" was hit off the bridge by an Austin High student who's Ford truck experienced a blowout and spun into him.

Heck, that bridge is dangerous enough, there may have been multiple precipitating fatal bike accidents.

I am a cyclist and know what y'all mean about riding on the sidewalk being incerdibly stupid and unsafe; that's why i ride on the street when i have to cross the Lamar Bridge. That said, I avoid Lamar like the plague and rarely cross the bridge.

The ped bridge was never meant to be a viable north/south artery for cyclists; it was built so people using the hike and bike would not have to cross Lamar. Also, due to the construction of the condos just east of the bridge, the sidewalk on northbound side of Lamar is closed as you are coming off the bridge. So if you take the ped bridge, you still have to get on Lamar to get to 6th.
