People shouldn't be hard on Colt

This is regarding time management. This link is is the 1982 Stanford vs Califonia game. John Elway is a senior QB for Stanford and was one of the best QBs to play college and pro football. In fact he led Denver to two super bowl wins and had a great career there. If he can have trouble with time management anyone can. Look at the 2:14 mard where Stanford runs a play as time is running out. John Elway is watching it and also should be watching the clock. He calls time out with 8 seconds on the clock. Why didn't he wait about 5 seconds before calling time out? Then the field goal play would have ended the game. That was poor clock management and Cal took advantage of it.

Another thing is after the field goal Stanford goofs again by running on the field with 4 seconds left and gets a 15 yard penalty. Two goofs killed Stanford but the big damage was done by the poor managment of the clock.

I think it's the old argument about being able to down the ball if the snap is bad. Personally, I've never seen anyone down the ball because of a bad snap, and then try to kick it again.

but a question. if a team were to try the down the ball because the snap is bad thing, woudln't they have to call a timeout to stop the clock? I can't imagine a holder having the alertness to be able to decide to down the ball, then jump up and call timeout.

that's just too much to expect, IMO.

this clock management issue given as an example is more like the clock management issues last year in the tech game. does this mean we should he harder on colt? i dont get the point of this thread and how it relates to colt.

I am more upset with his clock management against Tech last year. We should have burned more time off that clock and I was telling my friends that too.

We lost to Tech; we beat Nebraska.

How does an offense average forty points for ten years (AND this year.....again) with an offensive line that "failed again"? Just when exactly did we fail prior to the Nebraska game?

They had a bad day against Nebraska. End of story. Our Coaches and in most cases our players are excellent. It is shameful that so many "fans" have to be constantly reminded of this.

Why so many Texas "fans" write crap that could be coming from Texags.com is a mystery to me?

I even saw where one "expert" seriously stated that McCoy needed to stop going out of bounds instead of risking incomplete passes at the expense of the team. Are you kidding me?

What is it about Texas football and success that turns otherwise intelligent people into blathering idiots?

To hear a bunch of talk you would think that the team was 2-8 and had been for some time.

yeah, I was just thinking about that '05 Rose Bowl, our offense shut down when we got to the 20.

Didn't Michigan use two timeouts at the end that they could have used earlier in the drive to try to figure out what to do?

No you leave it in the QB's hands ESPECIALLY if he is a fifth year senior and is not a retard.

You save mucho seconds if everyone on the field is looking at the QB for their cue rather than the sideline then back to the field.

Bottom line, Colt almost screwed up. He did not.

Just about every chance in his entire career where we have had an opportunity to score with no time left in the first half or win the game in the second half, Colt has been lights out. He cut this one a little close but the outcome is what is important.

I am going to miss Colt McCoy more than any other player we have ever had.

The women in our family were giddy with excitement during our last scoring drive against TT last year. My son and I were screaming at Colt to wait for the play clock to get down to under 5 seconds. Tech would have had less than 30 seconds on the clock if Colt had run down the clock once we had the 1st down inside the 30. Oh well, that's water under the dam.

Check out the 4:48 mark. Someone's daddy was the starting QB for Cal that game.

You're welcome.

Sorry, but Colt bears all of the responsibility for the near choke of the decade. He is the one who waited until 5-6 seconds were left before starting the play. And he finally admitted that he was UNAWARE that the clock stops only after the ball hits the ground or an object (beyond the sideline). There was no reason to snap the ball so late. Even Mack told ESPN he was surprised Colt waited so long to snap the ball.

Bill in Sinton is right again. Colt was just doing his thing. Winning.
