Penders vs. Memphis

Go Coogs! Despite some on this board, a lot of us Houston Horns pull for UH basketball. If they win, they are in the tournament for the first time in almost 20 years. I am a Tom Penders fan so I am glad they are doing well.

P.S. Can we PLEASE schedule the Coogs in basketball. That would be a fun OOC matchup. Bleachergate was more than 6 years ago.

Yes, lets play our drunken former coach who bad mouths UT whenever a microphone gets stuck in front of him.

if they make the tourney, guarantee the NCAA finds a way to set us up for a first or second round matchup with them. The story lines would be too good to pass up.

only 2nd team to lead Memphis at the half this year. I thought they'd pull the upset, but...

Hook'em!!!

Memphis shot 32 free throws, Houston shot 2. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but on the other hand I don't think I would be happy with this.

and that stat, right there, is the PERFECT example of why it's so hard to win on the road (particularly in conference) in college basketball.

Tom Penders put this school on the basketball map nationally. I will never bad mouth him. He was also a great guy when I was around him and he treated my son very well as a basketball manager.

I will always be thankful for those things.

Yeah, great guy. Drunk dialing players and yelling at them. Releasing grade info to radio stations and letting an assistant coach take the fall for you. Swell guy.

I love how when this comes up everybody acts like they know exactly what happened and use those guesses passed off as fact to attack people's character.

UT basketball is probably better off for Penders having come to coach in Austin.

It's definitely better off for his departure.

I had a lot of dealings with Penders, and I'll say that in those dealings, he's an *** and a very vindictive man. Acts totally different when a camera or microphone is put in his face.

And, he constantly throws barbs at Texas. He may do so jokingly, but it doesn't sit well with me.

Abe Lemons put Texas basketball on the national map. Bad luck his last season cost him the chance to take the program closer to the level of his prime conference rivals Arkansas and Houston, both of which were very high on the national radar. Dodds and Weltlich tore down damn near everything that Abe built. Penders picked up the pieces and raised the program, but he never had a team as good as Abe's last one was before Wacker went down.

I'm sorry if my post served to appear too critical of Penders and not appreciative enough of him. My point is that while Penders definitely improved the quality of UT basketball above the level of play and enthusiasm of the fan base that was shown under Weltlich, I'm not convinced he did that great a job with the resources available or that he would have ever managed to get UT basketball to the level it has reached over the last 10 years.

In short, Penders was a good coach, but I don't know if other coaches that might have been available at the time might not have done better. Furthermore, I'm sure glad we have Barnes instead now, aren't you?
